Hi Guys,

I'm trying to find out which search engines and directories you can still submit a site to for free. It's proving harder that i thought. Up until last year i'm sure that you could submit sites for free to the big 6 search engines (google, yahoo, altavista, msn, excite, hotbot).

At the moment i've found that Google still accept free submissions, as do Yahoo if you sign up for a Yahoo account (Altavista and AllTheWeb now point you to submit with Yahoo as well).

MSN don't accept free submissions and ask you to pay Inktomi. (I tried this link but it seems to work on and off http://submitit.bcentral.com/msnsubmit.htm. Probably no use now as MSN use the yahoo database.)

Lycos say they have a free submission service still available but they point you towards Euro Business Pages (from Lycos.co.uk) or Fast and Inktomi (from lycos.com), who both charge.

Obviously DMOZ.org is still free and can get you included in other directories and search engines.

Mirago charge upto £44 per url.

Red Hot Chili offer a free submisson service for UK sites

Zeal offer free submissions to members only.

ISEDB still offers free submissions.

It seems that these days it's becoming harder to be able to submit sites without paying or becoming a member. I know that if you create a site and it's well optimised that search engines will spider your site for inclusion but i like to feel in control and that i'm doing something proactive . Maybe it's just me, i suppose correctly optimising your site is proactive when you think about it...

Cheers
Will

At http://www.isedb.com you can find listings of directories and seach engines. The site will tell you which are free and which aren't.
