I have a client's site that is registered with the TLD co.uk. The site ranks very well in all major UK engines, but not so well in the .com versions of these engines. (I.E. no rankings in search.msn.com but the site is in the index, and 8 top 10 rankings in search.msn.co.uk)

Is my site ranking poorly in the .com's because it's doing well in the .uk's? Or is is doing poorly because it ends in .co.uk? Or is there something else that I'm not aware of?

My next question is, what should I do? Should I create a .com version of the site? Should I advise the client that you can't have the best of both worlds?

    Thanks for any advice.

Some engines use the domain ending to identify the location of the site and give a co.uk site more prominence on .co.uk versions of the main SEs and a demotion on the .com versions. Yahoo Search powered engines currently do this (MSN UK and Yahoo UK) but others like Google do not.

However, even on the Yahoo Search engines, good optimisation can overcome the slight penalty imposed if you do not have a .com.

Yours is an interesting quandry. Most people complain that they have a .com in the UK and don't appear in the UK versions of the main SEs!

My normal recommendation is that if you have a UK site targeting the UK market - stick to the .co.uk. With good optimisation, you can have the best of both worlds and appear in both the local and international versions of the SEs.
