    I'm an 18 year old in Bournemouth (south coast of UK) inbetween two colleges presently, and very bored!

    Anyhow, in the last few months I've developed a search-engine. No leeching off other engines (like most new ones seem to do now-adays), I've done it all myself. Because my site is a directory site, it made sense to crawl the sites in it (you'd be amazed how many more submissions I get now it's a search!).

    Because the directory is searched, and no "outside" sites, I can present all the user ratings, reviews, card information.etc with the results - which makes them quite unique I think.

    The site is: http://www.eshoplist.co.uk/search

    It's a shopping search, but whilst you can search for products - it's much more search-engine like. If it finds a product it'll give the price, but it also returns any other pages.

    Technical info;

    The actual site is professionally hosted, but because I honestly can't afford to host the database (100,000+ pages) "online" I have set up an old computer as an SQL server. The connect is a 512k DSL, but the delay comes with the ammount of time the search takes on this end.

    The spider works via a combination of PHP (running in console), MySQL, and a few Delphi-hacks. And with that another script that is constantly delving deeper into the present sites.

    The search uses a combination of the large database on the server sitting next to me, which outputs the results and makes the snippets.etc (much faster than sending the whole page accross!), and the database on the actual web-server which arranges the data into a presentatable format.

    I'm not posting as some massive fan-fare-announcement, if the whole internet (somehow) did desend on it, it would fall off the interweb pretty quickly. I just wanted to share, and see what people thought about it. Any tips for promotion would be appreciated (as long as it grows slowly I can afford to keep up with it). Any comments, suggestions.etc would be appreciated.

    I only started it as a project, but you know when you spend so much time and get so far "experimenting" that you decide you might aswell do it for real? This was one of them.

    Imo, the only thing lacking is the speed! I'm thinking long and hard about a new way to do the initial database search - probably end up coding my own database-thing, rather than using MySQL (who admit that it isn't the fastest thing in the world).

    Sorry is this is the wrong forum to post it in, and please don't see this as spam! I eventually hope it'll be in line with the big-name shopping search engines.

    Sorry for wittering on,
    Steve

    Anyone developing their own search technology is to be encouraged. Well done!

    I'll be keeping my eye on it - but let us know how things develop.

    Cool, it should get better as it goes on with the all-the-time-getting-deeper (ooh!), and the longer is runs for the faster the results come back - so boo on the weather for all the powercuts recently.

    Just a case of getting people to notice it now!!
