Geez, That's all I've been looking for. A newbie search engine that asks for all my personal details, E-Mail address, and wants me to sign in to do a search. I wonder what type of traffic a paid submission yields.

I think there is a confusion due to the home page message. We are in the process of changing the home page. The new one should make the following points clear: Search is free and no login required (well for now, in the future the personalized search may need a user login with minimum information from users); web site owners/Webmasters need to register to submit content data. However, right now we don't have too much data to search for, therefore the main goal for now is to get more web sites submit data. Since yesterday we already have a good number of web site owners sign up and submitted data.
When the new home page is ready, I will post a note to let you know.

The home page at www.taoofsearch.com has been changed. The new page should avoid unnecessary confusion.
TaoOfSearch uses a new search model and need web site owners to participate and submit data.
In the "Help" section, there are four pages explain the new model's concepts.

Even we don't have many web units (sites) in our system yet. But I think I can start to demonstrate the power of our new system.
At TaoOfSearch home page select Service directory. At the new page find 'Localize' box on the upper part and select a location from the drop down list. You can see how the listing web units be narrowed down. You can easily image how convinient it will be when we have a lot web units in the system and users want to make a local search when they browse our directory system.
We have similar and more powerful narrow down capability in keyword/phrease search part. I will find an example to show you when we have proper keywords in the system.

Why don't you spider the DMOZ and Yahoo directory, then you will have plenty of data to experiment with.

Well, there is a fundamental difference between TaoOfSearch's data structure and other existing search engines/diretories. If you check our Help section, especially the "How to Submit Web Units?" page, you will see that we are collecting very rich information from web site owners. Only based on these rich information we can bring more convenient search tools and relevant search results to users. At the meam time we can help web site owners by finding their targeted users easily. It is just like what I showed in the previous example. There target usrs' location information comes from web site owners and when searchers browse the directory, they just select the location they are interested, and the two ends meet!
Please keep this in mind: The local search capability is only one of the features in TaoOfSearch search model and its power will be more obvious as we collecting more data each day.

I really like your search engine. It is a very good and brave idea to start one. However, it will be very tough to get widely known and used. But I wish you all the best.
I just submitted my website with title Crazy News to your database. It's your first item in the humor category. When do you think I will be listed?
Except for a few error messages, all went fine. Try to limit the text input with javascript to the maximum of characters in the future, instead of giving an error message. I suppose those errors will be fixed in the future, as this is very new.
My 2 cents:
Only accept one submission from a toplevel domain. And add a maximum number of keywords for that website. (like twenty) Then there will be almost no spam; websites will only submit for the keywords they care the most about, and hopefully that are related to their website. This is maybe not very good for the biggest websites, but gives a chance to the new ones.
I wish you a lot of luck with your search engine and I think you'll need a lot of luck.

Sorry for posting the url. I didn't know that was forbidden. I removed it now. On other forums this is not forbidden.
But how am I supposed to get a response to my question without that url? My site is still not indexed by them. And it's not that they have so much traffic that I have to wait a long time, I suppose. If it's an automated process, it should be checking it immediately. There are only like 20 sites there. It would be faster to review them manually this way.

Thanks tom_seo, bondings, and lisardz!
I haven't see any new post in this thread for a month. I thought people just view it and don't want to post anything. So I stoped to check the thread for several days. Sorry for reply late!
bongings,
Your site is already in TaoOfSearch database. You can see search it now. We will consider your comments and suggestion. Thanks for the input!

turboscout,
It is a good idea. Thanks!
Actually I am preparing a nwe topic titled something like 'Top ten reason to submit to TaoOfSearch'. When it is ready I will post it.
Here I just briefly say some basic differences:
1. We use web unit instead of web site or web page as the indexing entity. Web unit is a single function or purpose component in a web site. Site owners will decide how to divide the site into several units.
2. Web unit indexing include web unit metadata and web unit category. The web unit metadata include keywords and more. Several items are not easily find in the web content itself. Therefore, site owners need to provide them; and only site owners can provide them.
3. Based on #2, we ask site owners/webmasters to use our self-submission process to provide above data. This kind of data is condensed but more accurate than spidered data.
4. By using web unit metadata and combine it with web unit category together, TaoOfSearch can provide some new search features that will help both site owners and searchers to find each other.
People can visit www.taoofsearch.com to see more detailed desciption of the new approach. In the home page there are two demo keywords cases to show the new search features.

Well, the visual appearence (Web site design) looks way too crappy, not sure about anything else, as I searched for a few keywords and found nothing.
Needs a lot improvement as there are so many engines that offer the same kind of service that you do. Specialize in something. Something Unique!

openxs,
Thanks for the comments and suggestion!
Our top priority now is to get web site owners/webmasters to submit data. If we have a good size of data, people will see the power of the new search model.

I agree with openxs,
I understand that you are in the data collection phase, but the homepage is your first impression and if that looks like crap, what does that say about your product regardless of how good it may be.
My search engine will be up soon and that might give you some pointers.
I know how hard this is. I've working my butt off for the last six months. Maybe we can workout some data exchange plan.
Good Luck!
