I have a client who is performing very well in the major search engines for their target phrases.

They have requested information on what is required to rank on the UK search engines as well. After a brief review, I have noticed that if you search google.co.uk for example, the US-based results are returned first. They call this searching the "web". There is a radio button to submit the search term to UK sites as well which then returns only UK results.

Has anyone had experience with optimizing a site for both US and UK sites? The client sells their product to both countries. I was thinking of registering a .co.uk domain name for them and duplicating the site content under that domain name, however am unsure if can simply be that easy. I am aware of the duplicate content issue, however do not know if that rule holds true for different countries.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Definitely get a .co.uk domain, but i wouldn't duplicate the content because in the long run you would get penalised. There are also spelling differences between English and American English, which the se's would pick up

You would just have to redo each keyword's page but with different content on the .co.uk domain
