    Hi,

I'm currently developing a domain-specific search engine, and would like some advice for putting together a business model based on advertising. I plan to co-locat a 1U server (in the beginning) to run the search engine, and can cover the running costs for a year or so. The development work is all my own (so is free!!laugh!!) However, I'd like to get a feel for how advertising revenue is likely to grow (other than through my own wild imagination).

    Any tips/suggestions/advice welcome.

    Simon

    Hi Simon,

My name is Nathan Enns. I have some experience in the search industry from developing my own engine (called FyberSearch).

The answer to your question really depends on the level of quality traffic your search engine receives and the advertising system you decide to implement.

There are quite a few ways to drive traffic to your website but you can't discount the importance of the advertising program. Will you write the ad program yourself or license it from another company? Either way you go, it has to be something website owners can easily use and offer something they cannot get other places.

I can tell you that even if you are not able to make money from advertising quickly that writing and owning a search engine is both fun and challenging. I have learned a bunch sense I started in November 2003 and encourage you to give it a shot.

I would be happy to help you out with the various issues you are likely to face as you create your search engine. Just let me know in this thread or PM me.

    Good luck!

    Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the reply. I am experimenting with a few open-source advertising managers at the moment, with a view to tailoring them to my own needs: e.g, phpAdsNew or its offshoot, MaxMediaManager - the most important customization I would need to do there is integrate with PayPala, along with keyword bidding management. Another I've heard good things about, but which I would have to pay for, is AdPeeps.

What solution did you come up with for advertising management? You're right about the educational benefits of doing all this, though!

    Thanks

    Simon

    Jakob,

Sense this thread was started by Simon about his system, I sent you a PM answering your questions.

    Simon,

Sounds like you have thought thins through well. I tried customizing pre-written ad systems as well but decided to write my own from scratch. I called it “Custom Monthly Cost Advertising”. It was fairly complex to develop, especially coming up with the unique features. I have a hard time reading other people’s code so it took about the same amount of time but had the added benefit of being 100% my own. There are advantages to doing it both ways but I prefer doing it myself or getting help (paid or free) from other programmers so I get exactly what I want.

Either way you go, I am somewhat addicted to search engines and like to see people developing their own technology. I have some experience and some scripts you might be able to use, such as the PayPal program. I wouldn’t mind giving you a hand without changing or other types of strings, unless you ask me to write the entire system ;-)

Just out of curiosity, is the search engine you are writing at www.masidani.com ? The reason I ask is that I like the concept you describe there. I am all for niche/vertical search engines and have developed several of my own. Not close to the 161 that LookSmark did though, hehe. Will the ranking algorithm consider link popularity, outside authority sites like DMOZ or just the on page content?

    Ni Nathan,

Yes, masidani.com will be the home of the search engine when it is ready. This may be some time into the future, because there are some major developmental challenges to overcome first. Ranking will not be done on link popularity, because this doesn't make sense when you're not doing a full-web crawl. Also, masidani will allow semantic-based queries (such as "hotels in Ayia Napa with beach", so again link popularity won't work. Content-based ranking - or rather, semantic proximity to query - is best in these cases.

Sounds like you have thought things though well. I am sure you will do well. Let me know as it develops, maybe send me any press releases you do. I post for a search engine news blog and would like to track your progress.
