Has anyone ever heard of FastSearch? [link]
A client of mine is currently using it and has hired me to optimize the site for internal search. Apparently they are having some problems with it.
Just wondering how similar the search algorithms are to google and if it uses a similar search criteria.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi, it might be worth searching google for alltheweb - I honestly don't want to slander them, but I'm sure there was some recent story about some difficulties.
But it really is a minnow, and I'd not risk damaging Google rankings to optimise for such a minor player. Sorry.
Wasn't it one that started with big ideas and kinda drifted?
But this is all off the top of my head, and if I'm wrong, please someone correct me.

Quad, when your saying minor player we are really talking minor now especially since google is now pulling in 75% of the market in search.

Yup, and once you add in Yahoo!, Live and Ask, that probably leaves less than 3% for all the rest combined.
Perhaps I should have said plankton?

To answer mandag's post, it's likely the two "engines" share similar thinking in their algorithms, but it's not like G would have shared the source code with them.
All engines are giant filtering devices - with various bits of "intelligence" added here and there to help increase the likelihood of highly relevant results being returned.
If that software has a problem with returning relevant results for INTERNAL searches, something is not set up right: there's not a large enough cache for the index to be built in, things are getting dropped, the system running it is slow, etc., etc.
I've heard of some companies being pleased with that search options, others dumped it.
My guess is that applying SEO efforts to that system will only be partially successful...unless they maybe forgot to actually name every single document they've ever created.

FAST/Alltheweb was bought by Yahoo, but they have always been a minnow. Yahoo may have used some of the technology in their own search engine though. FAST's enterprise search is still independent, I believe.
