I've looked around for something like this and am pretty certain it doesn't exist - at least on a large commercial scale. I've come up with a service that will perform remote searches for you via email, then send the results back. We take the top 25-50 from infoseek, excite, lycos, hotbot and altavista (more coming if the demand is there) and send back just the links. I'm not claiming to be some programming wizard or anything - it's a pretty easy thing to do. I wonder more about the potential value. It's saved me a fair amount of time over the past couple weeks, and I have links in my email inbox now, so I can go back and check what a url was if I don't remember it. (yes, we can bookmark, but I dont' necessarily want 500 bookmarks on my browser). What do y'all think? Value in this? Should it be presented differently (the results)? Try it out by sending email to search@kimsal.com or visiting http://www.kimsal.com/search - sign up for a 2 day trial and go nuts. Please send me some feedback on this concept. Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea! Jump on it before someone else does! But get yourself a good domain name right away (IMHO), because it should be real easy for a search engine to offer this once they get the idea.

I have one in my head, but that doesn't help What "type" of company are you looking for a straight shooter or one with "envelope pushing" techniques?

You're right. I am almost reluctant to spend the money for that because it's TOO easy for everyone else to do. If there's any value in it, everyone will try too (much like linkexchange, imo). The only difference between each engine doing it and a 'meta' site is the quantity of results, imo. Thanks for the support. Have you tried it out?

I just registered www.searchbymail.com and will take up competition, straight away ! - nah, just kidding. I wouldn't personally use it, but that is because I am sitting on a backbone. Loads of software packages offer this type of search but you need to install them on your machine. To my knowledge, they do not have a massive success! A

I don't use it at work too much myself (fast connection) but I do use it at home. I used to use things like metacrawler and what not, so this felt like a natural extension. I'm not sure what you mean by 'software packages' that do this. What ones? And are they available on all platforms? This is part of what I like about the email concept - it works wherever I am. Part of me thinks I may be on to something here, but another part says that someone else would have done it already if there was much value. Any more insights anyone?

You might want to take a look at Tracerlock. This is a free service that sends you email anytime a site with key words you specify is registered with the search engines. It's very useful. http://www.peacefire.org/tracerlock/

To my knowledge, there are a few differences1. They only send you stuff every few days 2. It's only querying altavista 3. They don't filter out 404s OK - actually #3 we don't do yet either, but are testing this feature. Trying to code it so that it can test each link to see if the page still exists, but not overload my server!

What is your interest, do you seek to hire someone? If so post in the "I need some paid help" section. OR look up some of the companies suggested and linked to, contact them and their clients to get a feel for them.
