My site managed to come up #1 on AV, Yahoo, and Hotbot on a search for "buffalo coupons" It also comes up #2 in AOL, #1 in Lycos, and #11 in Hotbot for "Niagara Falls, NY" My logs say I have between 50-150 user sessions a day, my "free" counter "sitemeter" says an average of 18 per day. It ALWAYS says average 18 per day. I would think with engine rankings this good, I would be getting more hits. Any recommendations for a good counter (free if possible) http://www.allwnycoupon.com Free local coupons for Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NYThanks Jen

you can have number ones on every search engine, but if no one looks for you keyword you don't gain anything. If you go to the goto keyword suggestion box you would probably find that very few people search for buffalo coupons

GoTo search suggestions click on Search Term Suggestion List here's how many people searched on the term buffalo coupons: "No suggestions for buffalo coupons."It's the toss up between trying to rank well on a well known keyword that you know people will look for ( in your case, Niagra Falls ) and ranking well on an obscure term that you hope folks will search on ( Buffalo Coupons ). Hope this helps.

"Buffalo coupons"??? Apparently, very few people are interested in purchasing bison, even at a discount. Tasty, maybe, but hard to keep as pets. Seriously, you are probably not going to get tons of traffic from that search term. Maybe "buffalo shopping" or "buffalo entertainment" might do better - check the goto suggestions link provided above for other ideas. You might also try optimizing for specific merchant names if they have any name recognition in your area. That is, if someone searched for one of your merchants, "Prestige Jewelry", they might click on a site that offered "Discount coupons for Prestige Jewelry". Product categories might work, too. For example, if you have coupons for a jewelry store, "buffalo jewelry" might get a few hits (though some would be from people looking for, say, bison earrings...). One other approach that might get more hits is to look for reciprocal links at other Western New York sites. If someone is at a Buffalo-oriented site, they are more likely to click on a link to "Big Buffalo Discounts" or something like that. Good luck - go Bills!

Another good resource for finding out what keywords are good in your particular field is Wordtracker at http://www.wordtracker.com. It's not free, but the prices are pretty reasonable. I use it consistently when I'm trying to develop a "niche" page or "niche" site...

The best is www.wordtracker.com. I would not use goto it can be very deceiving. Nobody is going to search for niagra falls, NY they will search for "niagra falls" you need to change your page to reflect this. Of course now you will be up against pro's. Wordtracker will tell you which related keywords have the least competition. Buffalo coupons is a lost cause, wordtracker will tell you the keywords related to coupons with the least competetion. BUT the least competition also means far less surfers.

As for the lack of traffic for "buffalo coupons", I think your problem may lie in the fact that due to their cloven-hooves, buffalo have a hard time using a keyboard - making their Internet use quite limited. Therefore they generate only a small fraction of all searches on the web. Until grunt-recognition software is developed, I feel that their use of the web will continue to be very sporadic.

I was just trying the WordTracker trial and one of its suggestions was "donkey engine." I'm starting to think that "buffalo coupons" may have been a WordTracker suggestion in the first place..."Sorry! No-one has entered 'donkey engine' in 32 million searches." You don't say? Thanks for all your help...and humor.... I'm sure all the bufflonians out there appreciate all the jokes!!! But seriously, the wordtracker seems like a great tool. I am getting more into website design and marketing anyway. The coupon thing isn't working out as well as I planned. Go Bills... Jennifer http://www.allwnycoupon.com

My understanding is that some GoTo results can get skewed because of all the search engine optimizers (like me) who use automated position-checking tools like WebPosition to run searches across GoTo and other engines. Each tool search increments as a hit at GoTo thus affecting the results, especially for top phrases in highly competitive markets. Each month the searches at GoTo GoUp , probably more in response to all the new optimizers running nightly position reports. Wouldn't worry about it too much, it's still a good tool to have, but use with caution.

>>Why would Goto be decieving? <<If you want evidence that repetitive searches artifically inflate results, scroll down to the searches near the bottom of the list. On many searches, you will find a search term that clearly people are not typing in often, but it still has 30 hits in a month. Someone has obviously plugged the phrase into WPG for daily searches. Of course, if you are dealing with a competitive search term, who knows how many webmasters are running frequent checks, pumping up the Goto results each time. This is the GoTo corrolary of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. One other bizarre thought - I wonder how many webmasters have screwed themselves by running frequent GoTo searches for an obscure keyword phrase. As the phrase rises in the GoTo suggestions, another webmaster, who has already created doorways for the common phrases, decides to create one for the same phrase as the first guy - and plugs it into WPG to see how it is doing. Pretty soon it is up to 60 searches a month and starting to attract other optimizers. Eventually, it becomes a highly competitive search phrase, and everyone in that category is trying to optimize for it... and is checking their rank... but nobody gets many hits...
