This is an addendum to my last post....... Does anyone know exactly who Overture's search partners are? On their site, it says MSN, Altavista, Yahoo and InfoSpace. It also shows CNN, but I don't think that's relevent for many businesses. Just four partners? I all along have bought into Overtures claims that you should really be in the top three positions with them in order to get the best visibility, but recently I did some research and this is what I found.
MSN - The top three positions show up on TOP of their site, the rest are to the right. From my perspective, being in the number 8 to 10 position will put you in spot 5-7 on the right side, which is still highly visible.
Altavista - They show the top four positions at the top, the rest are at the bottom. I think sponsored listings at the bottom of the page is pretty useless, so I would go for the #4 position with Overture just to make sure I'm seen in this search engine.
Yahoo - This is the best I think in the respect that they show four listings up top and four more on the right, so being in a #8 position with overture will still get you pretty good visibility with Yahoo.
Infospace - Is it just me or is this search engine the most archaic out there? It took me a while to figure out where I was suppose to enter my search! Also, they obviously have the top 4 spots reserved for thier own sponsors. Overture's results don't appear until the #5 position, So if you're paying to be in the top three spots on Overture, you'll only show up in spot #5-#7 with Infospace.
The way it appears, bidding to be in the top three spots with Overture is only crucial for maximum visibility in Altavista - only. It is entirely unnecessary for good visibility with MSN and Yahoo. Infospace is a joke since they don't show Overture's results until the #5 spot, so top position with Overture is meaningless.
Does Overture have any more partners? They are very tight lipped about this as I have called and asked several times and have never received a direct answer.

Yeah, alot of crap sites for sure. From what I've been able to tell, Overture seems to be good only for being listed with MSN, Yahoo and Altavista, and if you're not in Overture's top three position with Altavista, forget it. I'm really just fed up with their apparant greed. I deposited money in my account with a rep over the phone and in the time it took me to hang up, and log onto my account, my funds were already depleted by $30. They apparantly just put all of your listings on line when you deposit money whether you want them to or not. Good thing I checked right away or I would have gone through hundreds of dollars in just a day! They also have this tendancy to "turn on" your listings which also happened to me. Why would I have 150 listings off but three on? Of course they refuse to refund any of these charges claiming that they were "valid clickthrough activity". You have to watch your account like a hawk, unlike what I've experienced with Google.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get otherwise legitimate PPC companies to delete obvious ScumWare and SpyWare partners? Greed may be one thing but losing advertisers over a reputation for using bad minority partners is unwise.

I don't think there is any way around the greed factor, flyingrose. When I saw Overture (one of the leading PPC providers) develop a partnership with Gator (one of the leading scumware providers), I figured there was no hope . At the very least, they should allow you to opt out of having your listings show up through those partners products.

I wonder if they ever consider what a reputation is worth and how much money might be diverted when they make a decision so clearly bad as the one to partner with Gator and other ScumWare.
There certainly is the option to do what is right. It just isn't the road often taken, particularly where much of society (and particularly corporations and the stock market) rewards the end regardless of the means.
