I'd like to relate our experiences of targeting different countries, and find out if we are alone in our problems with Google adwords.
Last year we set up some adverts targeted at Middle Eastern countries. Our customers in these countries couldn't see the adverts - none of them. So we got 6 other people in those countries to look for them. None of them could see them. Google's technicians told us we were talking crap and that their server logs were recording hits from those regions, and that their logs are final - pay us thank you very much. Since I did not have absolute confidence that our testers in the countries were doing things right, or understanding what they were supposed to be looking for, I let the matter drop.
However, since Google has given us telephone help ('cos we spend reasonable dosh with them), they have had to concede that there is a problem. I have spoofed IP addresses that I know from RIPE.net are in the countries concerned, and yet I can't see the ads for new campaigns that we have developed. Google's current position is that OK the ones I'm trying may not be showing, but they (Google) have IP addresses in those countries for which they do show. I have said it ain't much use to me if Google are showing the ads to (say) 3 people in a country and the other 10million can't see it. (The IP addresses I have spoofed belong to the main ISP in each of 3 countries). They are thinking about that.
Anyone got any similar experiences? We haven't spent a fortune on this, but we would have spent the time and money elsewhere if we'd known this from the outset.

I am seeing something strange. I did a search for inflatable furniture on a really slow computer (at work) and noticed results load up and them change within 1-2 seconds.
I ran some www capture software and found this:
http://www.google.com/search?q=inflatable+furniture&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N

Look at the ad results.
My capture software, which just shows the original html, produced this:

Superchaos: According to the above code (assuming you copied-and-pasted), there is a syntax error in the <style> sheet embedded toward the middle, where the HTML end-comment tag is not escaped properly within the stylesheet, probably causing it to continue the HTML comment section through to the end of the page...or until it reaches a valid end-comment tag.

(Personally, I think it's nice that Google lets shopping.yahoo.com advertise with them.)

Also, your computer at work may have a Yahoo toolbar installed.

But this has nothing to do with Google Locale problems.

Sounds like you might know something about Google Locale problems. I have a couple of very nice Irish lassies at Google helping me by phone (they really are the best call centre people I have ever talked to .... but their own technical teams are (in my opinion) feeding them crap to pass on to me.
Regards,
Mike

I know this is isn't an answer to your question but I know that for the US regional targeting seems to be pretty bang on.I am doing a west coast ad and it seems to always be shown to the right people. Maybe this only affects foriegn ads.

I suspect that both your ads were working but not for EVERY user in-country who searches for them. As far as the Google team is concerned your ad is fine, as it shows when they spoof an IP address from the country .... but then it's bound to as they are only spoofing IP addresses that are in their countries database. They are obviously not using the www.ripe.net database of IP locations as several addresses that RIPE confirms as being in the countries we know they are in, fail to call up our ads

I'm sure the first ad was working fine because I live in UAE & checked it, but the second one didn't work at all..not even a single impression..

The RIPE database does not indicate where an IP address is located. The data listed in RIPE is very frequently wrong or misleading.

Now, if you had testers in the countries, they should have been seeing the ads. I've done a lot of country targeting and found it to generally work well. Although initially not that great, the technology seems to have gotten a lot better in the last few weeks, and the targeting has improved signficantly. You may want to check again and see if the targeting is working.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for the info on RIPE. Our techies were using another one as well, but I can't remember the name. The thing is, we have offices in the target countries so we were able to use their IP addresses in RIPE which confirmed the correct country, and yet they couldn't see the adverts. Google tried them too and after trying to tell us that it must be something wrong with our computers they seem to have conceded that they aren't visible to at least some in-country IP addresses. They seem to have given up on the problem now though .... as they did 6 months ago when I raised it first.

Thanks for sharing your experience although I was a bit apprehensive when I first read your title. We've experiemented with the regional targeting to a minor degree for various clients, but we just signed on a client to do a major campaign with regional ads within the US being the core component. Seems your issue is more international in nature. Still good info to be aware of though.

The amount of traffic available using U.S. Regional targetting varies greatly. It is excellent in California with some clients receiving more regional traffic than they do national.

I have seen comments that it is decent on the east coast. I find that it is very low in Texas so I run National campaigns too using negative keywords and limiting language in the ads for my regional clients there. If they only had regional ads they would get far too little traffic to be effective.
