Don't get me wrong, I like Overture - it has brought traffic to my sites and my clients like a charm - something Google adwords never could do.
BUT because our overture ads get picked up by all sort of unknown directories and these directories get indexed by Google etc what happens is that a punter searches on appropriate term for our site on Google, clicks on an entry which lists our ad text thinking it is our site, but goes through to abcdirectory.com and sees a bunch of ads, one of which is ours. So when we stop using Overture and our ad is no longer on abcdirectory.com we've effectively created an ad which drives prospects to abcdirectory.com and not us.
Knowing that Google will display this listing for months how can we realistically stop using Overture?

I don't think the ads get "picked up" by directories. Overture has an advertising network service that it displays ads on. This is similar to Google's Adsense, which lets other web sites display Google ads on their pages.
Here's an option: if you know which site has the ads you want, you could contact them directly and ask if you can advertise with them. They may let you put up your own ads on the pages you want.

ultraseeker, I think you miss my point - it being that the places where my Overture ad is displayed get indexed. If I stop using overture my old ad text remains indexed and can draw in clients to a site where it is no longer displayed.

bikeman, it sounds like you're dealing with a 'scraper site' (a site that downloads the overture listings and uses them as content on their website). Those sites use Overture's ads to create useless content on their own website that then is changed enough so that those pages then rank well in the search engines.
Since the Overture listings are available to anyone then anyone can download the data (scrape it) and use it. Sure, it's a violation of Overture's copyright, but since those scraper sites tend to hide their contact information there's not much that can be done.
If you want to do something, you could contact the site itself and tell them if they don't remove your stuff then you will take further action against them (which may or may not work). You could use the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) to stop them (you would send the DMCA request to their ISP), or you could tell Overture--and it sounds like there's not much they will do.

Thanks for the assist, Bill. If these sites aren't actually authorized Overture advertisers, what is their angle for generating income? Also running Adsense or other ads? Affiliate programs? Other advertising based on impressions?

I have wondering about this as well, why doesn't this happen to Adwords Ads as well?
