Is there a limit for the number of keywords in Google Adwords account? Thanks

I have never been able to find the total keywords allowed; however, it is so high that I have never hit it and doubt many others will either.
I believe I read somewhere that there is a 10,000 keyword limit per ad group and I have no idea where they got that number as a search of Google's help turns up no results for that number.
Off the top of my head I believe you can have up to 25 ad groups in up to 25 campaigns.
If my memory and the above are correct, you can have 25 groups x 10,000 keywords per group or 6,250,000 keywords x 25 campaigns for a total of 156,250,000 keywords.
It is late and I cannot verify these numbers. I do have accounts with thousands of keywords but none with anywhere near the limits.

Recently I tried to include around 5,000 keywords in one of my adgroups and I got an error message stating that keywords should not be more than 2,000. So right now I always limit my keywords per adgroup to below 2,000. But it would have been better if Google would allow up to 10,000 keywords.

Thank you for the information. Although I have many Ad Groups with 500-800 keywords in them I don't recall any with more than 2,000.
Since I prefer that the ad match the keywords I don't usually have quite that many in one group.
Given the number of Ad Groups and Campaigns you can have that is still a lot of keywords.

Speaking of ad groups and campaigns, what is really the difference between these two? I've been using adwords for some time now but I still haven't quite figured out whether it is better to make another ad group or make a new ad campaign. Do they have any effect on clickthru's?

You set specifications regarding where your ads will run at the campaign level so you need separate campaigns if you wish the groups you are creating to run to different countries or want separate groups for content and search ads.
You use separate ad groups to control which ads show for which keywords.
Here are some examples to help explain the difference:
1. You have a group of keywords that are related so you put them all in one Ad Group and use the same ads for all of them.
2. You want to add more keywords and you want to use titles and text in your ads that are specific to those new keywords so you create these in a new Ad Group.
3. Your existing campaign is running search only ads and you want to run the same keywords and ads on content sites OR your current ads are running in the U.S. only and you want to use the same keywords but different ads to run in the U.K. (so you can use colour instead of color for example). In these cases you need a new Ad Campaign.
Ask again if this isn't completely clear.

Got a nice little book from Google today "The Adwords Reference Guide" the levels are;
> 20 ad groups can be created in one campaign
> Upto 20 ads per group
> Upto 1,000 keywords per ad group
> Upto 50,000 keywords per advertiser
Hope it helps

Thank you very much. I have hit the 20 ad groups limit but haven't ever wanted to have more than 20 ads nor more than 1,000 keywords.
Although I have accounts with thousands of keywords in them and I use far more keywords than most people, I have never hit that 50,000 limit yet either.
Unless you're a major department store selling everything under the sun it is unlikely you'll ever hit that upper limit.
All advertisers should be aware of the 20 ad group limit though as hitting that can affect how you've organized your advertising there. You may have to delete or edit existing groups or campaigns.
