I am running a standard AdWord campaign where our Ad Groups show up to the right, and one of my keyword phrases is showing up as number one in the colored sponsored listings on top of the organic listings. I'm loving it, but can't help wondering how this is possible?

We haven't paid any extra money for it, and in fact, when I check my account, it shows the average position for this phrase is 2.2 -- so they aren't even showing this ranking and neither is web position. Is this a Google mistake? Or does it happen if your Ad Group is showing up as relevant enough?

How ads end up on the top of the page is explained in Google's help center on these pages:

Top Position Every Time

How are ads ranked?
