Started with the following at .36

[wholesale cars] (not my real keywords)
    [wholesale car]
    [car wholesale]
    [cars wholesale]

But the Ads Diagnostic Tool says: cars wholesale (and all the keywords)
This keyword isn't showing ads. Although your ad is showing, its rank is not high enough to place it on the first page of search results.

I did a search for what people are bidding at bidtool.overture.com and showed the highest bid at .46, and my .36 bid would place me at 6th. Where do I find what people are bidding for google? I recently did this, so.. does it take while for the add to kick in? It says "status active".

You can't, but at least now Google's system will tell you when your bid isn't high enough to get on the first page. Raise your bid until you get impressions and/or the Ads Diagnostic Tool stops giving you that message.

Unless other advertisers limit their ads with their budgets, or pause them, or lower their bids, or their ad position drops due to the variables used in the algorithms your ads are not going to move onto the first page at your current bid. Most likely you'll have to pay more to get there.

If you do a good job, after your account gets some history you will probably be able to lower bids and stay on the first page.

Google's system will tell you when your bid isn't high enough, but that's about it. You have to estimate it.

Also, keep in mind that even if you bid higher than someone else their ad might show up higher due to quality.
