A few of my keywords are not showing on google and it says I should increase quality or bid more to activate. This is puzzling because they are newly added words for me and when I search on them myself there are only two adverts so they are hardly popular.
Any ideas - or is google just ^&*k'd again

That's a new Google game we're playing. You might try making sure the landing page has a title tag with the keywords in it. I've seen some advertiser's ads running that did have that specific difference when my advertiser's ads won't run for that search.
Sometimes greatly increasing the bid will get your ad to run; sometimes it won't.
