I strongly advise all advertisers and especially those who use broad match versions of keywords to log in and check your spending. Some recent changes at Google have caused the traffic and clicks on some keywords to increase dramatically. If you're not sure if you use broad match, since it is the default you would be.

This has not affected all advertisers or all subjects; however, since it can make an enormous difference in spending in a very short amount of time I felt it prudent to let advertisers know it would be wise to check and monitor all accounts.

See the thread Watch Spending When Using Broad Match and the links to other sites within that thread. It contains additional information and tips to best control spending and ad targeting.

I have seen major challenges managing Google Adwords accounts since about last November. Just as I get one issue resolved another hits like incoming waves on a beach. Although not really a good idea, in the past many account owners have basically been able to let their accounts run on auto-pilot and have been fine.

The huge jumps in traffic, clicks, and spending I've seen over the past several months tell me that advertisers are going to have to either start checking their accounts at least weekly and preferably daily OR make sure they have them really tightened down.

If you have an account you almost never look at you may want to really restrict where your traffic is coming from by taking these specific actions:

    1. Change all your keywords to exact match only*
    2. Run your ads only on Google search and opt out of both content and the Partner search network**

Both of those actions are going to eliminate the majority of your current traffic, clicks, spending and source of sales. I recommend them only for advertisers who have to be ultra-conservative in their spending and are not actively managing their accounts.

*You can use Mike's excellent AdWords Wrapper tool to change your keywords to exact match.

**You opt out of Google's content and search partner networks on the "Edit Campaign Settings" page.

The extreme wind today is causing my power to unstable so I am going to post multiple short replies instead of one longer message as I would usually do.

There are multiple reasons for the issues with Google. Here are some links that explain some of them:

THE MYSPACE AFFECT - 12/06 Both content and search Google Ads Running on Myspace.

Since myspace.com is reported to have twice the traffic of Google's own search engine they amount of traffic they could drive might be huge. If you bid in the top three positions at Google this will impact you more strongly than if you bid lower on the page.

The ability to stabilize a Google account may now be beyond our control. Where in the past an account could roll along spending about the same amount every month we're likely to see huge dips and spikes in spending that the majority of advertiser's businesses will have difficulty handling.

I have posted a new thread that explains this exposure called The New Roller Coaster of Google Adwords Spending.

Hmmm Maybe this is what "reactivated" what I believed was a non operational account

It still doesnt explain why I had no bills in the intervening time something like 18 Months

see my thread "do you have a 'dormant' adwords account

If google makes changes which effect the operation of your account surely they are legally liable to notify you of the consequences
