I just christened a new AdWords campaign and saw that my ads were running near the top of the first page. After a day, I was surprised to see a huge number of impressions, and relatively low CTRs. Then It dawned on me that I had forgotten to disable Google's Search and Content Network options. Since those were disabled I no longer see my ad on the first SERP, but rather on the second.
This experience clearly implies that Google gives a boost to campaigns that are enabled for Content Network exposure. Anyone else notice this, or is it just my imagination.

I wouldn't be surprised, but since I disable content ads in almost every campaign I don't happen to know whether disabling it later causes any specific change in where search ads appear.
I hope others may be able to test your question. If not I may be able to test it later if I can find anyone who wants to test conversions on content ads.

Thanks for your response. I never use content either. I just gaffed when I enabled this campaign. I think I'll re-enable it and report back. I hate that content stuff. Never seen such a preponderance of junk, at least as it applies to my market and products.

Okay...I guess it was my imagination. I enabled network exposure for about three hours and my ad ranking didn't change (still plodding along on the second SERP). I did notice that I was #1 on the Google Syndicate search, though.
I've been a loyal Google AdWords user for many years, but I have to admit that the logic of their system becomes less clear with each passing week. It used to behave in a very predictable and understandable manner. I've now learned to expect anything, because anything is usually what I get.

I'm not sure that proves that you didn't have better position before. One of the first blog posts I made started out "Google's algorithms are too complicated for anyone's good" and that is a good explanation of why a system that used to be predictable and controllable is now out of control.
I have just changed what I recommend regarding Google AdWords. I used to use broad match in all accounts. I am in the process of deleting every broad match keyword in every account and recommending that others do the same.
I expected deleting broad match keywords to drop impressions, clicks, and sales. That is NOT what happens. Read Deleting Broad Match Keywords Increases ROI and Lowers Risk for details and to see actual Account Snapshot graphs showing what happens when every broad match keyword across entire accounts is deleted.

Generally when you launch a campaign for the first time, you'll see the ads move up and down as google tests your ads against your competitors.
This gives google the chance to asses the quality of your ad as it compares your CTRs to that of your competitors in various positions.

I agree; however, what I'm talking about here is established accounts with budgets far higher than spend which theoretically would already be receiving a stable amount of traffic.
It is obvious from the actions I've taken lately that Google rations the actual traffic an advertiser gets based on variables such as budget, bids, CTR, and probably conversion rate.
