I recently set up an AdCenter campaign, and attempted to restrict it to a specific state. Fortunately, my site caters to a national customer base, because the vast majority of the traffic I have received from MSN has been outside my target area. Way outside...

I have a similar campaign with Google, and the targeting has been dead on (just 3x as expensive).

Has anyone else had this experience?

I have never set up an ad campaign tailored to a specific location. That is sort of restrictive in my view. If your business is specific to that state only then I would look at maybe yellow pages.com but in all honestly you should probably expand your reach.

I had thought of restricting my campaign geographically too but figured it wouldn't hurt much to make the net as wide as possible in this global village.

I agree, selling to all the States (and/or Countries) can be problematic under some circumstances. I may be mistaken, but I do not think you can sell and directly ship wine from a vintner to consumer across state lines in some states. In that case, advertising in a State where you can't legally sell your product is a waste of money.

Use a lot of negative keywords and block URLs? Anyone else have more experience with this?

I targeted my GAW campaigns to include only the countries that A) we ship to; and B) have English listed as an official language, as we offer no translation of web copy or customer service in anything but English.

It's been too soon to know if any noticeble effect. I'll try to remember to follow up with the results in a couple weeks.

out of curiosity - what is leading to to conclude that the majority of traffic driven is outside your selected target areas within Adcenter?
