i belive it's possible to rewrite a specific image request to a specific alternate - could totally be wrong here.

Serving an alternate image would still waste bandwith, why not just return nothing?

she explained why - she doesn't want to lose the traffic so she would like to serve a smaller, watermarked, image instead of the original one

Crash,

I can give it a try.

It won't matter that I need to create code for each image, at least not at this time. There are only two images being hotlinked to (that I know of) not including any of the search engines.
