I don't think I'd call myself the best in the world, but that certainly IS my goal -- and, I'll be working on it, until I achieve it. I'd worked as an in-house Webmaster doing SEO-work for two consecutive companies. With the first, I generated top results during heyday of AltaVista. Those results went across the board to most search engines, and survive to this day in Google, long after I have moved on. In the second company where I earned sales commission for my work, they did no marketing, and yet saw increases in their revenue year after year once I came onboard. Some day, that company will make an excellent case study in SEO as a PRIMARY means of marketing -- especially when your market is international with no clear advertising outlet. A few here will remember me publishing my results for a time, working on the coveted one-word top result. And now, finally I'm taking the methodologies I've developed and "bottling it" for clients here at a PR Firm in NYC. So, after over six years of being one of those quiet back-room people, I'm finally throwing my hat in the ring as a formal member of the SEO community. Only time will tell if my success to date is widely reproducible.

It's sort of like saying who is the best baseball or soccer player?
Too many variables and too many aspects of what a client/customer will define as success.
Plainly put ... a branding initiative will have different objectives than a ROI based initiative.
What ever makes the client happy and makes them come back again and again. Hopefully with their friends in tow with business cards and bags and bags of money.
I know of lots of success stories from small SEO firms that have delivered fantastic results to their clients, they may not be Huge players on the corporate level… but that shouldn’t diminish there level of professionalism and measurable results.

Just like my PPC, SEO is more art than science. Techniques and ideas can be shared and a methodology could be developed and documented; however, when it comes right down to it, how they apply to each site is intuitive.
There is no one best; however, the best will most likely be the hands on lover of the art who invests time and passion in honing skills and intuition.

Whereas a locally based company may bring quick local knowledge to the table, there is nothing that a good SEO that knows how to research cannot do as well or better.
If the local company is found - how do you know they could do it better just because they are local?
Local knowledge is good but it is not the first and most important criteria when finding a SEO firm that is right for you - In my opinion.
I say this because as an SEO or (web site optimiser) each and every job taken on is a *new* job that requires industry research, target market research, local research, competitive research & a whole bunch of things specific to the job... so
I guess I am saying local knowledge is great, but it is only one component.

I'm local to Atlanta... just an email or phone call "down the street!"
On the web, everything is local.
