If you have x amount of dollars, do you buy AdWords (or equiv.), or do you buy test links with that money.
Although AdWords give you a quick jump (instant gratification), I would think that buying text links give you a long term boost. By having the additional PR, you can then solicit recip. link partners.
Any thoughts? How would you approach this. How would you budget your hard-earned dollars?

you pointed the ups and downs yourself. So it should be obvious that your desision would depend on whether you are planing on staying in biz for the long or short term. The market you are targeting would also vary the desision. More details would be good

I am currently launching a number of forums. Each forum is targeting its own niche. They obviously need visitors and contributors. Like all forums, they are long term propositions (not get rich quick).
I could probably spend some money bringing in instant visitors and contributors, thru AdWords type ads. Then I could look at beefing up the PR and long term SE attraction thru buying links for 3-6 months.
I guess I am answering myself...

Adwords works once while a link might work longer, slower, giving both traffic as well as PR. I am sure I am tilted to Links because I do SEO/Link Building. But everybody knows, PPC is costly but affective.

davaddavad,
That's what I am thinking too. For an informational site (vs. ecommerce site), it may be harder to justify the cost per click. The ROI is simply not there.

No there is no short term roi. Some not too expensive high pr links that are relative to your forums would have many benefits pr and traffic wise and after you do establish your authority type site people will be asking for your links or you might be selling a few yourself then
