Well this works in several ways. I had a client a little while ago who came to us and she had a hotel in what is considered to be one of the busiest resorts in the UK and full of large hotels from big name players all the top of the engines along with more portals than I could wave a stick at.
We had to look for alternative parameters to bring visitors to her site.
This included optimising for other search queries, instead of just xxxxx hotels or xxxxx accommodation etc we would optimise for words such as:
places to stay in xxxxxx
hotels in xxxxxx
and so on,
We took her to the top of those sections witha well optimsied website. Her traffic grew from 16 visitors a day to over 500.
We then started to advertise her on relevant portals that had high traffic; we optimised a press release for her and put it into Yahoo and Google's eMedia Wire news service which was guaranteed inclusion as this si one of our core services.
This then increased traffic and her news release was read by over 125.000 people in a 24 hour period with a high click through rate.
It then increased page rank; we started linking her from relevant directories and built some resource pages into her website.
We then pulled all the stops out and started going for the generic larger names such as xxxxx hotels, xxxxx accommodation and we started to make a big dent. We did it carefully, with love and attention to detail, and also knowing the competition would react to this we didn't play all of our hand, we waited for them to react and adjust, went out bought some high inbound links and did a further bit more optimising such as changing important text in the first paragraph to strong a few more adjustments to titles and BANG we went number one.
It still remains there at number one in over 70 highly relevant categories and we are still keeping it there through a monthly retainer.
So, if you keep the above in mind and work out a strategic plan it will eventually get there.
I cited the above example to out line briefly some fo the work involved and what it takes. For the msot part it's a mixture of good SEO standards including compliance, strategic planning and hard work and perseverance. It will eventually pay-off.

yaa thank you vinnie,
i worked on differnt keywords, but i dontknow that we can put all the keywords in meta tags, like how many keywords we can keep in metatags,is there any limit for that, which are purely related to site but not there in that particular page.

Hi Ktagore
No, it's not about stuffing you're meta-data with keywords. Don’t listen to the bods who tell you this, it's wrong and outdated information. Search robots put little emphasis on keywords etc. Don’t get me wrong, it's okay to use them, but it's not the begin-all or end-all.
Concentrate on good body-copy well written, tantalising copy with the right amount of key-phrases inserted.
Good page structure with links flowing to all your content is a big help.
Make use of <h1> tags; make use of highlighting improtant keywords in <strong>
Make sure the title is consistent with your page copy.
If you are selling property and mortgages in Borneo then reflect this:
Title: Borneo Properties, mortgage lenders - XYZ Company
<H1> Borneo Properties
Paragraph: Today XYZ company announced that property rates are going down and housing is becoming more affordable. blah blah blah
<H2> Low cost mortgage for firt time buyers
Paragraph: As a result of properties prices in Borneo dropping XYZ Company has lowered its interest rates on mortgage lending. blah blah blah
Okay, now you have two titles you can link. Start with the title Borneo Properties and get people to link in from other property websites, request that the link text say's Borneo Properties.
This is just a tiny and brief over-view of the work ahead to grow your website.
