How much would you ask for this project?

Hi All

,

I work as an in-house SEO for a company that promotes their products thru an affiliate program.They asked me to start working on a new project : optimising their main site for "affiliate program". How much would you ask for this project, knowing that this is a highly competitive term and the responsability is huge?

The issue here as I see it is one of themes. To compete with established affiliate program sites, where every page is "on theme", using a site that is themed to a different word-space is not going to be easy.

If you could give us more information we can perhaps help more.

Yes,philh, you are right, "Theme" is the right word. The site is a general presentation of the company with details of each product on different page.So, in my opinion,the off-site factors are the way to go here.What i am asking is, what is the minimum salary any of you will accept for this project?

There are too many variables here to comment on a salary to do this work. If you go down the route of off-page ranking factors in such a competitive marketplace you are into link acquiring - a dangerous/costly area even for a relatively experienced SEOer.

I would be asking the question "is it possible"? Is there a better/different alternative?

I would think the question to ask is:"What kind of salary does an average SEO professional command in the very first place?"

By tagging it to the scope and amount of work you need to put in to make a complex project work, you can perhaps extrapolate a number for your salary based on the "average SEO marketer's salary"...

Salary is a sensitive topic for Business Owners and Executives. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating... If you can deliver the goods, you will be worth your salary... so if you have a "portfolio" of previous success, that is how you should pitch you "starting salary" and perhaps and contracted "bonus" on achieving specific revenue target... Business Owners/Companies need to show profits too to justify their investment in your expertise... So it is a two-way street.

Well - I created an Integrated Network of Market Attractor websites for an Office Furniture project - 20 in number.

The initial SEM cost was booked at $20k for 4 months.
The 20 sites are billed at $50 per month per site.
Today lead cost averaged between $4 to $3 for our SEO enabled CMS KISS websites.

This M/A project effectively does a Brand Name marketing campaign by default since the M/A approach is focused to gather targeted marketing Internet seekers that are looking for used furniture that can be re-modelled. Average sell takes several weeks with remodelling - some good $$. We are not attempting to Deep Brand this client - however their Alexa rank for their primary site jumped from 4 million to 1.2 million in a couple months. Mostly likely because of the landing page we redesign and the in-bound links. We just added M/A out-bound to landing page traffic stats to estimate visits to out-bound traffic flow. (We had them rewrite all of their inventory pages including how to structure the pages for Google scrapping but they used some cheap CMS tool that has no SEO added value for the HTML.) As is typically the case the CTO was competent but this level SEO / SEM marketing was way of his reach or understanding of what can be done within Internet market place; their management fought everything, everything was about cost not their vision because they had no marketing management matching background or education for this new Internet marketing approach. My background is as software developer includes being an account manager for IT consultant projects and working with international CPA firms and other large billion dollar organizations. This new Internet marketing approach is just pure fun stuff for me...

When you consider other kinds of traditional advertising media campaigns this is extremely excellent from a cost effective viewpoint. Its not unusual for non-Internet campaigns to run in $100+ range.

Flip it around and look at it from an employer point of view. They are the ones that have to be convinced to sign your check.

They want someone that can service their clients. They take a piece of the top. Most likely they already have a pool of clients they can press to use the new service that you can provide.

In this case ask for 200% of what you normally get. They can say, "No". They can say, "150%" or what ever.

You have the advantage that they are already talking to you.
They haven't sold client one and they are in negotiation with you.

Whatever your price they have the professional sales staff to sell the service and make it worth their while. That's all they want.

Give them good service and a huge mark up and they'll sell it.
