I am the same old me that I always have been...(do I need a trout to prove it? 
301 is Google's preferred and documented best way to move addresses. It can be very graceful and I have had zero trouble when moving domains even where the content (while on topic) may be different or different business. It up to you to be clever in engaging your traffic as pointed out by Q.
