The IPB forum I moderate at has been slipping in the ranks recently and I cannot figure out why, so I thought that maybe managing user links would help improve our rankings.
I've recently spidered all 200k of our users for links and found an amazing ratio of link rot (1/3 of links are rotted or spam like [http://I don't have one yet]). Those are easy enough to detect, but of the working, direct, viable links, there are roughly 3,000 working links, excluding images and files. I've already examined the most linked to websites, both working and dead, and found and removed quite a few nasty ones. That was a few weeks ago, and since then, our forum has seriously climbed the ranks (like 15-18 positions, finally back in the top 20!), so it's clear that this is working since I am not aware of any other SEO efforts being made.
Is there any way to tell of the nature (I.E. Spammy, or not?) of the links without having to visit them all?
Do image links (Live, or dead) matter? I've also been reomving a few images (Namely avatars) from competing forums.

good questions there...
welcome to the forums!
It is hard to tell whether the climb in ranks is due to the clean up or just the action of change (fresh & clean is good), but I think you are stepping in the right direction.
Your other questions will be best answered by others that have more knowledge in running forums etc...
