If you actually have soemthing newsworthy to report, a press release may help get the word out.
You can use a free press release service (search that phrase) and links in the press release can start spreading for you.
Here's the catch:
1 - there are thousands of press releases sent out each day
2 - if your "news" isn't really a big deal in comparison to other stories at the time, you won't get picked up by media outlets
3 - the real gold with these is getting picked up by a mainstream media source - which is rare.
4 - the info in the release goes stale pretty quick, so you'll need to keep them flowing if this is your ownly source for links/traffic/exposure
5 - media folks get pretty sick of seeing the same info over and over again - in fact, unless your info is really impressive, they'll most likely overlook it anyway.
6 - if you're just after some lift through online media/news feeds, press releases can get you that
Since it's free, it's worth a try.

Some companies send out press releases every day, often for the most trivial of stuff. They mostly just get lost in the noise.
Heck, Apple Corp did a whole "product launch" day just for a freakin' iPod leather case only a few months back.
