Just acquired a .co.uk domain with the same name of our .com. I have heard that it is best to host the site in the country of the domain for better search results in google uk, but the site would be duplicate content of our US site. What is the best solution for this? Should we just do a 301 re-direct or host in the UK? Any suggestions would be helpful.

I definitely would not put duplicate content on the sites, as it could end up hurting both sites in the long run.
If you cannot create unique content for the co.uk site then I would set up a 301 Permanent Redirect from the co.uk site to the .com site. Keep in mind, though, that it wouldn't benefit you if you do the redirect--you'll need different content on the co.uk in order to rank well in the co.uk results.

If you have one site, then the 301 redirect is the right thing to do, and will be the most effective.

Somewhere along the line I got the impression that duplicate content would not be seen as such across different top-level domains (i.e. same stuff on .com, .co.uk, .de, etc.) and therefore not at risk for dup content penalties. Is that not true?

dupe = dupe, regardless of the domain it's shown on

There might be a lesser filter. Matt Cutts might have tried to hint at that in the past; but there is still a filter of some sort.

Hey guys,
Been reading your question and I would like to know how to do a 301 permanent redirect from our .co.uk to our .com address please.
I have the same content on both although the .co.uk is not live at the moment - they have the same content as they are an e-commerce site.
Many thanks and sorry for jumping on the end of this thread. Hope to hear back from someone as soon as is convenient.
