How much useful are the social bookmarking sites, what we can get?? either traffic or backlinks??

That depends on how much you contribute on them. Here is a write-up of Traffic driven from StumbleUpon and these types of sites are growing rapidly so traffic potential is also increasing.

I'm my opinion they are very useful. They can increase your link popularity and also send a lot of visitors. Some of them are visited by many thousands of people each day.

There has been a ton of buzz about StumbleUpon lately because that seems to drive the most traffic. Remember that kind of traffic is going to convert more like content rather than search most of the time.
Web Analytics are going to be more and more essential to determining where the best sources of traffic are when it comes to investing your time and/or money. The most important skill to acquire is to truly understand analytics, what the numbers tell you - and even more importantly - what they do NOT tell you (but many THINK they do).
