Do you incorporate Social Marketing in your SEO mix?
I currently only use the normal SEO strategies ie optimize web site, obtain backlinks etc.but have been offered an expensive SM coaching program that guarantees high rankings faster than the above methods.
Is SM something I should now include in my SEO strategies?
Thanks

the short reply is yes
if your referring to social networking, or even including this forum in social media, as long as it is configuired to be SEF all the posts will land in the search engines and give you more exposure
every page helps

Most of these expensive schemes just teach you how to join facebook and link drop.
You'd do better to use google for some tips on how to get that tiny bit of benefit that's possibly there for the taking.
As it happens, I don't think I've ever seen a sm result in a Google search ... but that's possibly because I don't have any interest in them!

Do you know of a trustworthy resource that keeps an updated directory of prioritized Social Networking sites?

SMO is NOT SEO.
SMO or SMM is another form of marketing.

Thanks for the clarification.
I mentioned it as I see many marketers using it to get high rankings but I'm a little wary of it because of the possibility of linking to bad neighborhoods

I believe that large areas of the "the blogosphere" will fall under the banner of "bad neighbourhood" in the not all that distant future.
There are some very dangerous "incestuous circles" that maybe look good to join now, but are on the edge of being noticed, and relegated.
Be elsewhere when that happens.

SMO and SEO are two entirely different concepts. SEO helps to get high rankings for the targeted keywords, while SMO is all about creating brand awareness on the net. The only relation which I can find between the two is that SMO increases the CTR of your website through traffic inflow.

Social Media Marketing or Social Networking is the enhanced version of off-page optimization process. As natural Link building is a time consuming process, SM can bring better result both in the form of backlinks and traffic to the website.
All the best.
