Hi,

I have a client who has around 50 domains that he wants to point at his main site. He purchased these domains to cover misspellings, and to keep his competitors from infringing on his trademark.

Anyway, I am considering using the domain forwarding feature at my registrar, but they do not offer 301 redirects. My question is this... will my client be penalized if I point all of those domains to his main site without using the 301 redirect?

Thank you,
Lisa

That would be a massive mistake, to serve the same content via 50 domains.

Yes, you will need the 301 redirect, and you can do it with just a few lines of code in the .htaccess file, assuming you have an Apache web server.

Hi,

Right now they're all using the 301 redirect, but we are eventually going to move away from our dedicated hosting solution, and the registrar's domain forwarding service would've been a quick/easy way to point all of those domains without having to set them up individually. Trying to cut costs, but it looks like I won't be using the domain forwarding service until they give the option to have 301 redirects.

Thank you for your answer.
