Please forgive my ignorance but I'm new to web building.
My site achieved a PR of 3 after a few weeks but no sooner had it done this than I started to notice the number of visits declining.
I couldn't work out why, then it occurred to me that at about the same time as the new ranking I amended the home page and created a number of tables which contain both text and banner HTMLs.
Although the page undoubtedly looks more attractive to the eye, the text within the frames isn't being picked up by Google.
Have I screwed up here?

you can check that by looking at the 'text only' cache of your web site, and if it lost the content then it might be the reason because search engines like sites with lots of content

Thanks Animated. The text-only cache is showing the text of the site as it was before I changed it.

your site is not optimized and you used a sitebuilder, se's don't generally rank sitebuilders well.
I ran a report that said 4 of your iframes are not indexable
try removing the frames completely, they do not work well for seo

Cheers, thanks for the advice. Guess I'll have to learn to use FrontPage or something, like everybody else.

Dreamweaver is from Adobe. The recent version is CS4. The damage is around US $ 400/-.
You can try other WYSIWYG HTML editors - some of them almost free or you pay a nominal fee.
Arachnophilia is a free HTML editor and you get it here:http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html
You can try OpenOffice's Writer to create your HTML files too - though it may be basic. Unlike MS Word it doesn't clutter the HTML with lots of code.

That's very useful, cheers. My real worry though is - what the hell would I do with them?
Oddly enough I used to build my own sites through Publisher back in 97/98, albeit very basic, but I've completely forgotten how it's done. Just reading some of the terminology scares the hell out of me.
And will Writer and Arachnophilia be compatible with my operating system and the software/anti-virus that I've got installed?
Sorry a lot of questions I know, but this is daunting for the uninitiated.

Not at all. That is the reason for this forum being on the scene for the last 10 years.
Arachnophilia is written for Windows 95 onwards. As for OpenOffice Writer, it is equally compatible with most Windows version. These software will not affect /hinder any antivirus or other software you have.
Writer is a little bloated and may require a little patience when you open it.
Basically creating static HTML files and publishing them is not Rocket Science. You have done them way back in 97/98 and so it shouldn't be a problem. Go ahead. If you need any help, it is available right here.

just don't go back to using publisher, that would not be acceptable
if you do not what to get into coding, you could use a content management system. setup would be a bit daunting for you, but for 50 bucks (or free if your server has fantastico)you could have someone install drupal or joomla for you, and then you would have a full wysiwyg and no need to code.
