Phoenix - that is a really tough question to give a pat answer to.

As Mj has asked - how good are you?
Also how experienced are you?
Do you have a portfolio ( sites as examples ) to show?
Are you willing to never stop learning? In SEO you never can stop learning.

So if your good - really good, have experience and a good portfolio and are willing to keep learning and can work with customers ( which is not always easy lol ) then yes I would say you can earn a living at this. As to how much $ - well again there is no pat answer. Some of it depends on what I asked you above and also is there a specific field you will be working in - what county do you live in. These are all factors.
Suffice it to say I know of several people who do web design and SEO and generate about 5,000+ a month of income.
That is NOT to say you will/can. Not saying you can't - just don't take my friends examples as me saying "yes, you can" smile

There is no such thing as a best career, it depends on your strengths, SEO and web designing have different skills involved so different characteristics.

The safest is which ever one your more comfortable in, could you justify the price to a client so you can pay your bills, can you manage multiple clients without leaving anyone out?

The best way I can answer your question is, How long is a piece of string?

your portfolio speaks for you in SEO, if you show your skills you get paid the high $$$$$ and if you know how to catch the big fish (clients)

phoenix - your best bet it to follow your passions as well as to know your strengths and weakness and base your decisions on those.

For example - I am horrible at programming ! I could learn it - but I have no desire to. I was forced to learn some just to get by, but I would never work with a client who was going to need programming - as that is my weak area. If I had to add programming for a client down the road, I would automatically out source it.
You have to know your strengths as well as your weaknesses and be willing to work within those.

Make sense?

"How long is a piece of string?"

A string is twice as long as the distance from one end to the exact center of the string.

...Yah, I know... off topic and inane.

but Its tough being a new member and finding a question you feel safe answering. smile
