can someone point me in the direction of understanding the relationships between the search engines and directories? the more research I do, the more confused I am about who is providing results to who and who you should make sure you are ranked with, etc. Is there a chart or something that shows the overlaps or relationships between the engines that will allow me to get a better picture of things?

As far as the Open Directory Project goes their index is used by Google, AOL, Netscape, and hunderds of lesser known engines. There is a short listing at {url]about.com[/url]. Go there and enter "search engines based on ODP." I'm not sure about Inktomi, but I'll look into it and get back to you.
