I know everyone says you should submit manually because the SEO software will get you banned but I saw this on the Addweb site.

"At Cyberspace HQ, we are very concerned with the issue of search engine spamming. Many submission programs and services allow you to do submissions that not only the search engines don't want, but can actually get your website banned! We understand that many people don't even know they are breaking search engine rules, and could be penalized for committing an act they didn't even know was wrong. This is why we have incorporated a comprehensive rules checking scheme in the AddWeb database. AddWeb will help keep you from submitting where you should not submit and when you should not submit. If you are breaking rules when you submit to an engine, AddWeb will skip that site and inform you upon completion exactly why it skipped.

We don't want to try to beat the search engines by tricking them. Instead, we want them to welcome AddWeb submissions so that your website is a welcome addition."

Does anyone have any experiences with Addweb?

There are really only 4-5 search engines worth submitting to nowadays. Why would you want pay to use an automated software to do that when you can do it manually for free?

Well it does more than just submit. Its supposed to keep track of rankings, keywords/metatags and some other cool sounding stuff like that. I'm obviously a newbie and I'm just trying to find the best way optimize. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The best way to optimize is definitely by hand. Though usage of some software can help in some tasks, I wouldn't recommend that you solely rely on such software to look after your website promotion.

The addweb software as promoted on the company's homepage flags up the following bad points IMO

1. Submit to 700,000+ search engines & directories
No way are there that many used/popular search engines - they're more likely to be FFA pages. As bhartzer said there are only 4-5 you need to concentrate on.

2. Link Trading to boost link popularity on search engines.
Sounds like a Zeus-type setup

We'll have to see if there are any existing addweb users that can give better comments.

A 'reciprocal links generator' and known to be a bit spammy.

Hello,

I'm new to this and would like to know if it is alright to submit my site using submitters?

Are they a good way to submit a site.

Hi cecc,

You shouldnt need to use site submitters - just submit by hand to a few of the major ones (Google.com, Alltheweb.com, Inktomi) and submit your site to some directories (DMOZ.org, JoeAnt.com, Goguides.org)

Submitting to 700,000 search engines as the submitters usually advertise is just a sure way for you to increase your spam email

I am also an Addweb Customer since 99. Since I have updatet to the newer Version, to me it seems there are nearly no updates on the search engine database. My opinion is that if you offer 700.000 search engine submissions you should post a daily update. This is getting more and more weak at the search engine submission software companys. We have started to build up our own database which is daily checked and updated.

But the submission interface is still impressive when you submit with the maximum of channels. smile

"My opinion is that if you offer 700,000 search engine submissions you should post a daily update. "

They don't offer 700,000 search engines. There aren't 700,000 search engines. Heck, I'd say you're pushing it to think that there are 7,000 search engines, even including regional and topical search engines.

The reality is this:

When it comes to search traffic, most of it comes from two different areas:

1.) Search Engines: These include crawler based indexes like Google, AlltheWeb, AltaVista, and so on... These sites sometimes have paid inclusion programs that will allow you to pay to get certain pages of your site listed quickly and updated often. Beyond that, nearly all of these sites will eventually find, and index your site for free, at no cost to you an without you submitting to them. They simply need a way to find you...

which is here #2 comes in...

2.) Directories: These are nearly always human edited, categorized listings of Web sites. You cannot submit to these (and do it properly) in any manner other than by hand. You need to read the guidelines of the individual directory, seek out the most appropriate category, etc... all of this takes time and a human touch. The good news is, if you get listed in these, you'll speed up the search engine spiders finding and indexing your site.
