Chris Ridings has just released a Search Term Difficulty Checker that I feel is really worth checking out.

You can access the tool here (you'll need a Google API key): http://searchguild.com/difficulty/
And there's more information about the process it uses here: http://www.chriseo.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=24&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0

Interesting tool, I only just now ran across this message and checked it out.

I played around with a few terms, just to see how it ranked things that I already ranked for. (And based on my rememberance of how much effort it took to rank for them.)

It looks to be pretty accurate, I had a search going while writing this and the phrase travel is ranked as "practically impossible." LOL! smile Then I found "cars" as "hard."

"search engine optimization" is ranked as "intermediate."

Chris, Will, have either of you guys (or anyone else) tried using this to judge the level of difficulty associated with a certain phrase and then optimized for it to do a comparison of how easily you pulled a rank from that phrase?

I'm currently in the process of trying for a 'practically impossible' phrase thejenn, so we'll see wink

I've also seen a phrase that is marked as 'Easy' whilst my colleague swears blind it's rock hard to rank for - so I might try a tester for that too

I'm getting ready to start a new campaign, I think I may run the phrases through there to pick up a ranking and then see what comes of the optimization effort...

I'll be curious to hear back with what you find, or what others might find in the meantime.

I've managed to break the top 10 for a 'practically impossible' phrase with mainly anchor text optimisations, but have yet to try for the 'easy' phrase (too lazy wink )

Does this difficulty checker store the results in some database? I've noticed that many of the searches take 30-45 seconds. Others take only about 1-3 seconds. AND, after I do a search on a particular keyword that takes 30-45 seconds, the next time I try that same keyword, it takes only 1-3 seconds.

I've tried some keywords that I know that others must have tried, and those results are kicked back in 1-3 seconds, so I don't think there is something going on with cookies.

Anyway, it makes sense to store the results somehow - to improve the effiency of the tool, but I am curious what will be done with the results? And, how long are the results stored for?

It seems like a pretty good tool so far, but try the phrase "keyword research" and ask yourself if it would really be "EASY" to get top listings.

Like with any keyword research tools, you ought to check your results with other methods. But I'm adding this free tool to my list of favorites.

I think the tool does cache the results which does make sense as AFAIK it's quite an intensive task to crawl the top ten results then put the pages through Chris's ranking algorithm.

Well, I'm #4 so it can't be that hard a phrase smile
