In case anyone is interested, last night I wrote a pretty decent SERP tracking tool (tracks historical data for each keyword)... Free for anyone to use if you want...

Beautiful. I gave it a test run with a few dozen phrases and they were all spot on accurate. Very nice to be able to just add the keywords and then examine the results all on one page.
Any chance of you setting something like that up for other engines as well?

Maybe someday... want to add some new features to the existing setup first though (charting of the historical data), emailing reporst, mass uploading of keywords/URLs, etc...
For now though, it's just Google... they have a good API, which the other engines lack... maybe if they all got together and had some standard API (but I doubt that will happen). I just don't really want to get into a mode of trying to keep up with various search engines... especially not for something that is free.

Ok, I can see your point. It is a very nicely laid out tool though, and the setup time to quick and easy. Thanks for sharing the tool with us.

Also... just added a few new functions for it...
- "Check All" button to query all your keywords at once
- "Advanced" button to switch the input mode to a format that lets you add keyword/URL combos in mass
- Rank value will display a color (red, green or black) to quickly show you if you have moved up/down on your rank without needing to view the history detail
[url removed. See URL from first post in thread.]

Okay, last post (I think) about new junk...
The detail window (clicking on the button to the left of your keywords) now plot a graphical chart to show you search engine rank changes over time.
The interesting thing about it is if you track the same keywords for a different URL (competitors for example), it will plot all of them on the same chart, so you can quickly see who is moving up, and who is moving down on one chart.

I like that last bit...that's a nifty feature. Kinda gives you warm fuzzies if you are on the right end of the scale.
Methinks I know of a few phrases and sites I'd like to add in there and watch for a bit.

Added some new functionality... you can now toggle the system between keyword tracking and backlink tracking... (so basically it tracks historical backlink values as well in case you didn't pick up on that).

Okay... more functionality...
- You can email reports
- You can export reports to CSV
- Using better logic for finding results (instead of always searching sequentially though results, it starts at the last known point and branches from there). This will conserve people's Google API key (since it only allows 1,000 queries per day) and more importantly take some load off the server. Also makes looking up new daily results infinitely faster, since it usually gets it on the first query.
- You can create Custom Charts
- If you forget your password, you can have the system email it to you (no more emailing me... yaaaay!!)

And just when you thought you wouldn't have to hear from me anymore...
- Also tracks weekly and monthly changes (in addition to daily).
- Charts are infinitely scalable (on both axis). You can set your chart size on a per user basis under "Edit Preferences".
- Made lots of internal changes to make the system pretty much infinitely scalable (I wasn't expecting so many people to use it every day in the beginning).
- Better error checking if Google's server returns unexpected results
- The "Check All" option spins itself off into it's own thread, so it doesn't hang your browser while doing it's "thing".

You've certainly been putting a great deal of effort into developing this tool and it's to your credit. I'm not suprised so many people are using it - it's great

Funny how it works out that way, huh?
I woke up one morning and decided I needed a way to track SERP movements... By 11am I had my personal version running. Over lunch, I thought... "hey... I bet other people would like to use this." By 3pm it was ready for the world (unique logins/passwords, self-signup, etc.) And over the next few weeks added a few things here and there...
Just strikes me as funny how you can have an idea one morning out of the blue, with a released product (well, service in this case) the same day. The Internet is cool like that...
The amount of users using it and new users signing up is crazy though. By my estimates, the system will be storing 3.5 million new records of data per day in 6 months (which is why I needed to make some structural changes to be proactive about scalability).
Glad people like it and use it though...

More feature requests fulfilled... This time for International users... there is now full unicode support within your keywords... so characters like 'èüÑ", etc. will work fine. It also works for all other languages... you can query Japanese, Chinese, Russian, etc. keywords.
For the user interface, there is now a language module system... you can choose your language on a per user basis under "Edit Preferences". Currently there are English, German, French and Spanish translations (Russian and Japanese are being worked on).
That's it for now... back to work.
