    Can someone give me some good recommendations on link checkers, both free online ones (if any) and software ones. I know about web positions one, but any others?

    smile Thanks

    xenu babeee! it's the best and it's free

    xenu's link sleuth

    it's a download you run from your desktop - not the prettiest reports - but easy to read and covers everything you need to know about what links you have (not just html), where they work, where they don't and it provides a handy site map you can copy/paste into a page for your site

    btw - don't even know the owner, just a long time user

    [w3] w3

    Never used that one.

    What does it offer over and above http://validator.w3.org/checklink then?

    Way more info.

    w3 is good for a quick check, if you just need to verify that you didn't miss something or made a minor change and want to make sure you didn't break anything in the process.

    Xenu is great when looking at a new site (built by your or not) updating a site or doing anything more than minor.
    The report output is HTML.

    It provides multiple reports:

    * Broken links, ordered by link
    * Broken links, ordered by page
    * List of redirected URLs
    * List of ftp and gopher URLs
    * List of valid URLs you can submit to a search engine
    * Site Map of HTML pages with a Title
    * Broken local links
    * Orphan files
    * Statistics for managers

    The site map is my best friend. It's more than just a sitemap. It's generated with actual links and uses the page title as the link text. You can copy/paste the sitemap into your site template (instead of hand creating one). You can also see what your page titles are - for all your pages - so you can see, at a glace, where adjustments can/need to be made. I find this extrememly helpful when reviewing a new site that I did't build for SEO.

    Manager Stats can be helpful as well, here's an example from a new site I'm working on:

    Statistics for managers
    Correct internal URLs, by MIME type:
    text/html 8 URLs 34589 Bytes (33 KB) 47.06%
    text/css 1 URLs 895 Bytes (0 KB) 5.88%
    image/jpeg 8 URLs 30240 Bytes (29 KB) 47.06%

    Total 17 URLs 65724 Bytes (64 KB) 100.00%

    All pages, by result type:
    ok 17 URLs 56.67%
    skip external 13 URLs 43.33%

    Total 30 URLs 100.00%

    I might give that one a try. I don't tend to try out new tools if the one I already use is already doing all that (I think) it needs to do.

    bah - smample reports - it takes one minute to download, install, and run a report for free.

    g1smd - crash is right on. xenu is well worth the regular use i get out of it - i've been a consistent xenu user for a few years now. it is a quick download, free, and easy. Come on, give it a try ... and please let us know what you think of it.

    Oh my god !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I thought, ummm, yeah, it just checks links. Yeah. Ummm. Yawn. Big deal.

    Then I read the last two posts, downloaded it, and installed it.

    Jeeeeeeeeeeez. It is quick, easy to use, quick, easy to understand, quick.

    The W3 site gives some slightly more interesting data on redirecting URLs, but is miles slower.

    Honestly, the software loads faster than most websites - as g1smd stated, it's Quick!
