Hi All!
What's the real benefit of using the Google APIs. In simple terms I just know that they can be used for tracking ranking on certain keywords over a period of time. Can anyone really elaborate on this and tell how to start using it actually. I've got the license key and downloaded the API developer kit.
Thanks in advance. Eagerly Waitign for your reply.
Regards
Vani

I just started using the free tools (keyword tracking, backlink) over a digitalpoint.com and so far I am very impressed with them.

Actually, he did answer your question, I think it just wasn't the answer you were expecting.
The Google API is primarily used for one of two reasons...
1.) The reason TN Todd mentioned...to plug in the key and use tools that have been developed specifically for Google. For example...Digital Point has a great Google Rank checking tool. You can enter all your keywords and have the program automatically check the rank on all of them and then present it in a neat little list. It saves time. Now, to use this tool, you have to plug in your Google API key. Basically, the key gives you 1000 "uses" of Google per day for things that would otherwise violate Google's usage policy.
Apart from using an API took like Digital Points, you might use Web Position Gold or another automated rank checker. These programs don't use the Google API and violate Google's TOS. Using them could get your IP address banned from searching Google.
So basically, the Google API is a "key" to using unique tools to search Google.
2.) The other way to use the Google API is to develop a tool that others can use with the API number to access Google. There are tons of these... we pointed out the Digital Point one...there are also several that have been created by ResearchBuzz. If you're the programming type, you may want to use your API key to test programs that you've written that make use of the Google database.

Basically it lets you use or "search" the database without them having a fit that your searching too much. I know once some people thought google decreased your rankings if you continuously checked rankings manually (searching for keywords and searching through their SERPS).

Well, it's not *just* that they don't like people screen scraping. From a programmers perspective, use of the API is nice because it always gives results back in a pre-defined format. So it's much nicer to program with an API as opposed to getting what you want out of HTML files.
