There is Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask Jeeves, Dogpile, etc... Do any of them stand out? They all seem the same to me. It looks like some of the other ones like girafa (www.girafa.com), xbar (www.wanttc.com), and birthdaycards.com (may be spyware. be careful) are worth a look. Do they provide enough added value to blow away the other toolbars?

Don't forget Alexa (I've heard that Alexa's rankings are based on those who have their toolbar installed).

Correct. I have heard that about Alexa As well.

Another issue is personalized search and social search.

Eurekster let's you see what your friends are searching for. It also changes relevancy based on what your friends deam relevant.

Should one's searching habits be private, even if search engines can't identify unique users?

I believe so, but the data could be very lucrative in the right hands

OK, googel offer the PR bar and search, alexa offers the AR of the curent site. They are the main reasons I use these two bars. What do the others offer that you guys find useful that is unique to them?

    hi

I use only google toolbar due to its search and PR stats. Other toolbars have nothing to be used...

    I disagree,
The alexa toolbar has a better popup blocker than googles (IMHO) and it displays the alexa traffic rank of the site you are on.

Also, another good feature is the fact that it gives links to other sites from the same category in the DMOZ directory that the site you are visiting is in.

Dogpile just announced that it won the PC Magazine, Editor's Choice for best toolbar.

I think Dogpile is good but there is still much for Toolbar makers to improve upon (understatement).

Mamma.com just released their own search toolbar (http://www.mamma.com/info/services_tools/tlbar/tlbar.html). Looks like yet another cookie cutter toolbar. BORING!

The other day, I found a site called MoreGoogle (http://www.moregoogle.com/). From there, one can download a plugin that displays thumbnails (from Alexa, I believe) in one's google results.

In other words, when you search using Google, you will now have thumbnail previews next to your google search results. I like this tool alot. However, the thumbnails are not in real time. I believe there is a database of thumbnails and if your website does not have a thumbnail then your'e out of luck.

A 3d-tech company called Viewpoint just released version 2 of their search toolbar.
