Hi All,
I am a new member in this forum and for the web development community. I have a requirement for developing Link Popularity Software. I am completely lost. I want your expert opinions on how to start with that. I have checked various products, but didnt understand how they work. It would be great if any one can explain their working.
Sorry if I am not more specific, but with more ideas, I will have more specific questions. Thanks for your help.

If the purpose is to automate the link exchange process, then the best software is the brain, the eyes and the fingers on the keyboard (for writing personalized emails) IMHO. But if you have another purpose please explain what you want to achieve and you might get help here.

'Link Popularity Software' could cover quite a broad area. What do you mean by it? Checking link popularity in search engines? Finding possible link partners? Something else?

Thanks for the reply Mark. Yes, I would like to automate the process. My first request would be if anyone can give ideas about how other link popularity softwares work?
My idea is to get the users registered from my site, and store his site and his site category in my database. So when another user visits my site, he can see the sites already in my database for the category he had selected. Is this the way other softwares work, or do they search the whole web? Also regarding the linking part, why should we give a separate link page in one site, instead of redirecting him to the given address. I know redirecting affects the search engine spiders, but if not we need to have many links if we link to many other pages.
I am sorry if I am not making sense.
Thanks for your co operation.

Thanks Webmaster. I would like to include both of what you have mentioned. Since I am new to this area, it would be great if you can explain me the details in layman's terms.

Well to get link popularity readings from the search engines you will have to query them with the relevant syntax eg. for Yahoo you'll need to query with link:http://www.url.com and parse the resulting html for the number of results.
As for finding link partners, you'll have to come up with your own algorithms for that
