The thing with linking like every thing else in Internet Marketing is to have strategy. Ask yourself "what do I want to achieve from a linking campaign?"

If PR is what you are after, use a link exchange tool like SEO Elite, Arelis 4 etc. There are several on the market, and they'll make your task alot easier and more enjoyable.

If you are after free targetted traffic from any source, then your best bet is to go for articles/ezines/newsletters etc. These will get you traffic which is already predispposed to whatever you're selling. They've read your article(s) and have a familiarity with you, engendering trust.

Also the articles/ezines/newsletters will get you the most valuable (in PR terms) type of links - one-way links.

Link farms are no-go zones. They are next to useless as far as targetted traffic is concerned - everyone on them is there for the same reasons, so very little, if any, traffic comes from them. Also Google and the other SEs are damping on the significance (PR-wise) of links from such sources; that is if they don't ban your site altogether. Simpy don't link to such sites.

Categorized directories are ok as they can get you some traffic, but their ability to pass on PR is limited at best, for link-damping reasons.

Short of the articles route, which can be difficult, time-consuming and slow to take effect, a reciprocal linking campaign with the aid of the tools I've suggested is your best bet.
