I've received a call from topsearch1 (formerly known as topsearchsolutions). This is a service where people need to download a toolbar, and advertisers pay a flat amount for specific keywords and phrases for their ads to appear on page 1 of the search engines. This company claims it has 12 million subscribers.
In the past, I've heard that such downloads are a waste of money, since (a) many of them carry spyware and/or (b) very few people download the toolbar.
Any thoughts on using such tools as part of online marketing efforts?

How much money are they talking about?
What sort of free trial offer are they prepared to give you by way of demonstration?

No free trial... $2,000 flat fee per keyword or phrase for 1 year. With multiple keywords and phrases, discounted to $1,500 each per year.

skip it - I once did a buy for a similar idea - the test showed loads of traffic...and every visit stayed less than one second on our site - totally useless traffic.
Now, I haven't used these guys, so the results may well differ, but so long as I'm at my company we'll never spend money on something like this again - ever.
Most times, the subscribers may not even know they have the item on their computer. Sure, they know they have the tool bar, but they are unaware that it also alters the search results they see.
...and how up to date are these people? They still have an askjeeves.com logo on their site.
Sorry, I'd never recommend them to anyone...

Avoid. You can't even be sure that the clicks are from real people.
Waste of time.

Oh dear - if one Googles for topsearch1, this thread is in the number 2 position.
I don't think they'll like that very much. Never mind though. It will definitely help any prospective clients in their research.
Sporty - AskJeeves still exist in the UK.
