Name of Site/Business: Ridge Bird Feeders
Site's Main Purpose: Ecommerce/Sales
Please Review the following:
Does the home page sufficiently convince people to go further into the site?
Does/can the site achieve its main purpose?
Additional Comments/Notes
This website sells hand crafted, large quantity, white cedar bird feeders. Both already made and custom made. They are much more expensive than the typical bird feeder, even the wooden ones, that you can get locally. My clients dilema is how to make this page stand out, how to separate his product. I think the homepage is a bit verbose and I'm not sure there's enough attention drawn to the catalogue button. Any thoughts?? Thanks all!

you are right about the verbose text, stay away from block text, remember people tend to scan a page, most of the info on the main page goes on the about us page,
when i looked at the site and gave itmy ten second scan i didn't realize you sold birdhouses. Put that right on your main page. "we sell the best birdhouses in the world" no explanation, then show some birdhouses maybe 4, a picture, a bullet point description (handmade green cedar birhouse) a price, a buy button and a more info link to a product page with all the detail you want. the main page is the first page of your catalog
thats what i would do good luck convincing your client.

I personally like the very personal type of writing/text you have on your site - I feel like I am buying this product from someone who really cares about it and knows what they are doing - not just from company XYZ.......
I am not so sure that this is a "bad" idea considering the product he is selling - this is an area people like to research and spend some time on ( usually ). I got the have a cup of tea and lets chat and shop for a while feeling there - My opinion
I like the layout and chose of size of text as well as the pictures and such.
From a SEO view he needs more links - but I am sure you know that

OK I liked the site so much that I just had to go and do some SEO research on it - ( yeah I know I am a nerd lol )
he has a good chance at this being a successful site - 606 searches done in June for wooden bird feeders and a google alt title of only 265 sites with that in their tags.
Hint -
*get more attention in tags paid to wooden bird feeders
More Information ----
* 956 homemade bird feeder - term searches in June and only 114 sites using those terms in their tags.
These are just a few things I found in 10 minutes of research on this subject..
There are lots of ways to get this site high ranking in SEO

you can clean up your code a bit more
"buttons"
some uncessary tags in there
your keyword selectino is wrong, you' wont rank for any of these words, actually you might, however, nobody is searching them.
some basic tags you can clean up like i said; almost there though.
lots of unesscessary meta tags
<a href = "http://centralmaineweb.com" target = "new">Web Hosting and Search Engine Optimization by <strong>Central Maine Web</strong></a>
that, you take out yesterday and from all your pages, and never put it back.
