Is positiontech still feeding inktomi? Our renewal is here, that's why I ask.
Our email said that the new program is sitematch, and that we need to roll over to sitematch to ensure that we stay in Yahoo. Is this true? Our site is well placed in msn and yahoo. Another thing, I listed another url in sitematch that wasn't listed anywhere in yahoo, or msn, and it doesn't rank at all. That url does well in google.
This is very confusing, it's worse than looksmart.
If sitematch is that bad, should we both? If we don't renew and go to sitematch what happens to our listings,
anyone have an experience where they did not renew with sitematch and stayed in yahoo/msn?
Thank you.

Positiontech said in an email, that all URLS indexed in Yahoo through them would be removed by Yahoo, if the URL is not rolled over into Overture's program,
Is this true?

I recently got a similar email. Here's what it said:
"On 12-01-2003 your 12 month subscription to Inktomi Search Submit will expire for the URL(s) listed below.
It is our hope that the program has benefited you with its fast indexing, 48 hour refreshes and reporting of click-thru traffic.
Yahoo, Inktomi's new owner, has launched a new paid inclusion program, called Overture Site Match. Site Match will replace the Inktomi Search Submit program. By enrolling your URL(s) into the Site Match program you will assure that your subscribed URL(s) remain in the Yahoo Index and remain available to leading Search Engines such as Hotbot, AllTheWeb, and now Yahoo"
It doesn't say that you will be removed ... but certainly sounds ominous. What's been your experience on this gang?

I would say this substantially true. Even though many people claim their pages continued to show after dropping PT many people claimed just the opposite. Since there is no consensus on the issue you're gambling. I utilized a variety of PFI programs at the time. The exact url's excluded by Yahoo through the Positiontech PFI are still crawled by Inktomi as there were when I was with Positiontech. The spider crawls the previous PFI pages but no other pages of the site. It’s like the spider stops automatically once it looks at the previous PFI pages. Absolutely no previous PT pages or any page from that domain appear in the Yahoo portals. Since I have a comparsion level from utilizing differing services it seems to validate what they are saying. By the way that particular domain has 1300 links leading to it from other sites and the Yahoo slurp still ignores it.
What they aren’t saying is “you better” or we keep you out permanently, IMO. I wish I had never fell in with them.

Amen to that ... I had avoided PFI like the plague then one dark day I said WTF lets go for it. The biggest mistake I ever made concerning SEO!
Every site I had PFId into inktomi are now GONE from yahoo ALL my other sites still remain.
If you were willing to play before Y! expects you to pay now .. if you dont want to pay then youre not going to get in!

I am confused because we have many urls indexed by inktomi, not just the one we paid for with positiontech, the main url. So does that mean they will drop every url? If we have to pay for each url that's a lot!

There’s a very interesting article on the Internet about a fellow who worked for two of these Inktomi resellers. I wish I had added it to my favorites. His article was so in depth and corroborative it left little doubt in my mind he worked for the companies. He did say that with the resellers he worked for once you quit paying for the url’s they were blocked from the Inktomi database. He didn’t identify those companies. He was switching employment at the time. He also explained that most of the exclusion policies originated from what one-time customers did. He did say Inktomi and Yahoo were quite aware of the exclusions.
I’m willing to bet those resellers now use non-disclosure forms with their employees.

Well, that is not normal because our urls were in Inktomi before positiontech,
our company can't afford to pay .30 cents per click on URLs that are already in Inktomi, even if we do get the traffic we can't afford to pay for it. We are not made of money. Our business would be bled in a month by click charges.
We just can't afford that risk, I can't believe Inktomi would drop all the URls.

"We just can't afford that risk, I can't believe Inktomi would drop all the URls."
It happened to one of the sites I included with Looksmart, then Positiontech. It seems to be common practice to punish anyone who drops any program. On all the other sites I created and maintain, I never paid for anything, and they're all doing great. It just doesn't pay to pay. Especially since at some point or other, they're bound to change the rules where you'll suddenly find yourself having to pay more than you originally agreed. If you can't afford it, or disagree with their policy changes, you're out. Banned. Perhaps some people have not been affected, but from my own experience, it's too much of a risk.

When our PFI at Ink ran out a few months ago I decided not to go with SiteMatch. We dropped out of Yahoo for around three weeks and then came back. No problems. I think that if you are in the Yahoo directory and have inbound links you will be OK. HTH

Hi philh,
The site I had a problem with is actually the only one that is listed in the Yahoo! directory and has 1200+ links. So, I guess it depends on the person/dept./company removing your links when you drop out.

Yes some urls have dropped out and some are in. It changes day to day. Still we can't afford to pay .30 a click, that's the bottom line. We don't feel like being punished just because of positiontech, we have another url very different product, that was in positiontech and it was totally taken out. We paid for overture and it's listed in yahoo but not one hit so far. So, the logic is why pay? If they ban you, it's not likely to get back in anyway even if you pay Overture.
Yahoo is very strange, I am sure that eventually their listings will get so bad, they will have to start crawling properly again, after all they just started listing our URL before they banned it, so it's not like we were in yahoo forever and ever. But we are in the directory and have lots of inbound links, so we will wait for someone to get smart.
But we don't want to be manipulated into looksmart/positiontech/overture confusion ever again.
Good Luck
