After attaining top ten positons with many pages for many keyword phrases for a couple months our rankings dropped off the map. The domain name in the URL listed in the SERPs has been replaced w/ IP address for many pages.
Yahoo is still showing 18 pages indexed for the domain name, none ranking. Yahoo is showing 86 pages indexed as the IP address, none of which are ranking.
Any insight as to why the IP Address has replaced the domain name for 80%+ of the indexed pages and why the rankings fell off the board would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Greg

If the IP Address has replaced the domain name I would say that most likely there's a link somewhere to that IP address. And if you're using relative links in the navigation on your site (e.g., you're using links to page.html versus http://www.yourdomain.com/page.html) then your whole entire site, along with the IP address, could be indexed that way.
It could also be a database error at the search engine, but in most cases I've seen there's a link somewhere to that IP address and the search engine started spidering the site from there.

I appreciate your help - I did a link:http://IP in Yahoo and found 6 results. 4 of which were "link directories" with links to the site using the IP in the URL.
3 Thoughts...
1) Was this done maliciously knowing we use relative links and had extemely good visibility for many keywords (Top 5, Top 10 for about 40 terms)? We never asked for or knew of these inbounds. The 'directories' are not of high quality.
2) Is it possible to set up a 301 redirect for an IP address to force the crawler to the domain name? I have done this previously from one domain to another but never IP to domain.
3) I am going to contact the sites and ask them to change or remove the links. Hopefully they will cooperate, b/c I cannot force them to make the change.
Again, I appreciate your insight. I look forward to posters thoughts regarding this issue.
Thanks,
Greg
