Hello,
Everybody is telling me how nasty Google is when it finds duplicate contents. But, is it the same with Yahoo or MSN?
I am planning to change my site's domain name by making extensive use of 301 Redirects. Since something might go wrong in the process, I would hate if my current Yahoo ranking suffered (Yahoo in Japan has over 80% market share and Google only less than 15%, therefore one ought to pay much more attention to Yahoo's rules than Google's.

Hi,
I am not sure about msn but yahoo seriously considers duplicate content, It will take some time and later it will completely removes the webpages from its index.
This is my experience.

Since nobody before you answered my question, I stopped looking for answers here and therefore I am late with my thanks for your reply.
You said you got this bad experience with Yahoo. Do you happen to know - or just imagine - which vetting elements Yahoo (and Google) use in their duplication filter? Apart from text similarity and perhaps file names, what one should pay attention to in order to avoid being caught by their duplication filter?
I am going to build a new company web site that uses the same domain name but a different extension, and would like to keep both.

As a rule of thumb, each page should have 85% unique content. Not just within the site but different from every page on the web, so you cannot use the same content over different TLDs (extensions).
Google is known to issue penalties willy nilly for duplicate content, but all decent search engines will penalise in order to show not only relevant but diverse results within the SERPs.
Who would use a search engine whose results were 1000 pages with the same info on? Not me!

Thank you for your reply. The reason why I would intend to have two separate web sites for my company (the new one having a local extension and being hosted locally, which I think Google prefers) is that I am still in doubt whether making a Redirect 301 is a safe thing.
While the old domain is well positioned in Yahoo, it is not in Google and the new domain would be my attempt to improve the positioning in Google by linking from the old site to the new one.
Even if I did this, however, I would take care to change the text possibly by 30-40% or so.
Unfortunately I am very confused by the Redirect 301 issue. Here and there I have been reading that it *might* be dangerous for web sites that are already well positioned. Others report that it is a viable solution, hence ny doubt.

This is NOT a good reason to move to a new domain.
Google keeps historical records of sites, and a new domain must start again at the very bottom of the pile.
If you have two sites with the same content they will both not do well in the SERPs. The 301 redirect fixes that.
However the new domain would still have problems ranking for quite a long time.

Google will favour the old URL, so your efforts should be concentrated on making the old URL rank better on Google.
You can move the site to a local IP block to please Google. It doesn't have to have the localised TLD.

Your replies are very valuable as usual and are convincing me to rethink what I was going to do. I will probably move my old domain (12 years old) to a local server in the hope to see Google ranking improve.
