Hi all,I've been wondering - how much more "traffic" can be expected when and if submitting to LS?! I know the amount of traffic can not be compared to that from search engines, but since submitting to LS also gets you into MSN, Excite etc., what can I expect? What are your experiences? Thanks in advance

Does anyone know what time of day Gotos results can found on their major search engine partners web sites, ex: AV.comModerator?

Please explain to me how this PPC service works. Is this costly? Who do they work with? Thanks.

Good morning Buffalo Bill! A good LookSmart listing can bring a respectable amount of traffic, particularly from MSN since the results first shown are from the LookSmart directory. My suggestion is to do a search in MSN for your main keyword phrase(s). Look at the first set of results that come from WEB DIRECTORY SITES (these are the LS listings). Pay close attention to the titles and descriptions as you'll want to write your submitted title and description in a similar manner. MSN is probably the second or third largest traffic generator to my clients sites and this is due to a great LS listing and also Inktomi listings (the Inktomi results come after the LS results). If you've got the extra cash and have unique sections on your site, you may want to submit a few pages at the $199.00 per page rate. If one good listing can bring the traffic I see now, just imagine what a second or third listing can bring on another set of keywords and phrases.

I have noticed that AV is some what hit and miss with Goto. Sometimes they are showing results and sometimes not. Even when AV is showing the results, they only show with certain keywords. AOL shows all all the time. I understand (but I don't know for a fact) that Goto paid AOL a large up-front fee, what the deal is with AV... well.. they don't seem too interested in Goto results, but lets face it, AV is hurting. That fact is clear, and more so everyday.

I looked around and was really impressed by all those testiomonials! It must have taken someone the better part of a whole coffee break to get that put togehter. WOW!But the thing that most impresed me was how they got the Neilsen ranking people to list them, (they have VERY prominent links to the list on pretty much every page), with some 4 million uniques for the week of 4-7 but they were able to somehow get Neilsen to NOT list them in the top 25 for the month when getting 14 million per month, as whenu claims, would clearly put them there. Man, getting Neilsen to list you is pretty tough, but getting them to NOT list you, that's real marketing power. If the software and program are as powerful as it appears, (actually looks pretty top shelf in my opinion), I don't see why they would need to rely on such a vague approach. I have not tried any of their services and have no historical background to justify any comment aobut them whatsoever, it just seemed a little weird when I read their thing about partners and it kept talking about being bundled with downloads. Not that that might not make money or anything, just seemed a little weird to me. If a product is good and it works, why does it have to come with such a weird vibe just becuase it's on the net and it's got to do with marketing? Maybe it just does, I don't know. Maybe, like everyone else, I've just been bitten so many times I think anything longer than it's wide must be a snake.

I think it depends a lot on your keywords and the size of your site. I have been disappointed by yahoo and looksmart. My site has over 2,000 pages and 15,000 items. How am I supposed to pick a 20 word description? If I submitted all of my keywords, it would be cheaper to buy looksmart. You would think that msn would spider sites that are listed in looksmart, but we haven't seen that. They just index the lousy description that the editors at looksmart screwed up anyway. If you have a fairly narrow site and can really sum it up in 8 or 10 keywords, then I think it is worth it. If your site is large, better to stick with the aggressive spiders like google and fast - maybe altavista too but it won't follow links (in most cases).

From the WhenU.com site: "WhenU.com's SaveNow software is a contextual marketing engine that offers your users: coupons, ads and offers based on the URLs, keywords, context and search terms that the user is viewing while they are on the Internet. As our partner, you share in the revenue generated by the advertisements, offers and coupons that your users see. SaveNow is a great way to monetize your user base while still keeping your downloads free. ""SaveNow is bundled with many of the Web's most popular downloads including: MP3 players, screensavers, online games and shopping tools." Sound like scumware to me folks - I would stay far away.

Is there any code I can put on my site to block WhenU's "top text" links?

I don't think most scumware can be disabled by webmasters, but TopText can: http://www.thiefware.com/disabler/
