Before opting for LS's paid listings, we checked out keywords to find everyone on top of the LS listings came up on top of similar searches on MSN.Now we're in and on top on LS, but when MSN refreshed we were #30-40. Our sites contain superior content/optimization to the competition. What gives???

Now that 85 PPCs seem to be running loose in the land, I wondered if PPC software is available to license. Do these guys all develop their own platforms, or do they all buy a particular product?

It seems that MSN has some internal way to rank the first set of sites returned. Danny Sullivan at SearchEngineWatch says that MSN editors give sites in the LS database a rating when they review them, and that the sites are ranked based on that. Other theories are that you have to pay for the top rankings. My guess is that you're appearing behind the set of sites that got that special ranking. So you may have optimized for MSN, but if you didn't get a special notice at MSN, you still might appear lower than you want. One other thing I should mention is that LS and MSN have different ranking mechanisms, so optimizing for one won't necessary mean good results on the other.

Given that you are priced below your competition coupled with the fact that most folks will scan at least the first 40 listings real quick, why get into a situation where you need to pay a lot just be among the competition. With your attractive price you should get plenty of visitors and if it is what they want, the order will follow. I have one software product at $89.95, while my competitor has his at $69.95 and I still get sales from the very same search term we both are in. So ..price is not everything ..but it helps!

Hi boxman,First I just want to ask where you have a list of 85 pay per click search engines. I only know of 81. Any more that I could add to my list would be greatly appreciated ;P As far as I know, about half of them are using software called JackHammer. JackHammer is the PPC portion of the software, where Hyperseek is the directory and search part. They're both required to run a Pay per click search engine. Check out http://iwebsoftware.com or go to the "Running your own search engine or directory" forum here. It is run by the (Brilliant) author of Hyperseek and JackHammer. Nathan~

How would we go about getting them revisited by the "spider" or editors? Submit again to MSN?

Regarding your automatic billing question: GoTo.com has a couple of payment programs that are designed to make managing your account very easy. The Non-Stop Traffic Plan is designed for clients who want to keep their Web site online at all times. You authorize us to charge your credit card for a pre-determined amount when your account balance is low. When you have 3-5 days of funds left in your account, we will automatically charge your credit card for the amount that you specified and will notify you by email. It's that simple. You never have to worry about your service being interrupted. The Fixed Budget Program is for clients who have a specific amount that they want to spend each month on GoTo. You determine how much you would like to spend on targeted traffic each month. We'll apply your clickthrough charges against that budget amount. When you reach your budget, we'll temporarily suspend your account, if necessary, to keep you within your budget. The best part is, we'll automatically reactivate your account at the beginning of each month and charge your credit card. And if for some reason you do not use all the funds you had budgeted, we will roll the remaining credit over to the following month and charge your credit card to re-fill your account to your full budget amount. If you are a GoTo.com client, you can sign up for one of these payment programs using our DirecTraffic Center at: https://secure.goto.com/s/dtc/center/ GoTo Guy

Hi Boxman,Just going through the postings that I missed, and wanted to let you know about 7Search.com's licensing program. It's under the domain www.searchenginesupplier.com, and is certainly worth a look. 7Search has both a private label service, a program that allows you to sign up advertisers on your own, and a special interspersing program for meta-search engines. Once again, its certainly worth a look. Best of luck, 7Search-Pete

Our placement on LS is fine, it's MSN where we hit the dumper for some reason. All the sites around us on LS are top MSN also. I don't get it.You mentioned paying MSN for a listing. Just listings or does it involve billboards?

The theory about paying for listings at MSN was something I heard from someone else. The theory was that at least some of the top listed sites in the search results were paid listings. Personally I don't think MSN takes paid listings, but I could be wrong. If you were to pay for a listing there, I don't know how you'd go about it.

I have been following many of the new PPC at www.payperclicksearchengines.com and have found that a good 90% of them are using a script that costs under $60 (yes that is sixty bucks) it is available at http://smartcgis.com/smartsearch/ I don't know about any of you but i will not pay for a listing with a PPC that uses such a cheap solution. I would be interested on others thoughts on this.

Nothing that cheap could have everything covered, how does it stop scammers going clicky clicky for example?

From what I can tell, the $60 Smart Cgi script is just as good as JackhammerThey even have unique user tracking so that there is no clicky click And from what I can tell, there isn't much for fraud protection at GoTO either.
